This weeks Tuesday Top Tip is probably one of the easiest ways to be a little bit more eco. I'm talking bananas! When you're next in the supermarket, instead of automatically picking up a bunch, look for the single bananas. It may seem like an odd suggestion, but what you'll be doing is helping to reduce waste of a product that's probably been flown over from Central America. Those lonely individual bananas still taste as good as the others so simply picking the odd ones does you no harm at all. Packaging can extend shelf life and reduce food waste ✨ Sunday is #InternationalFoodWasteDay, Marcus Teghammar, is the Product Manager for Duniform®, the concept for sealable food packaging solutions. He tells us more about the role packaging plays in reducing food waste. "Sealing food in protective packaging is one of the best methods to preserve our food products, because the quality of the food remains stable for longer and you use less material than you would with a lid. By minimizing the exchange between the inside and outside of the packaging the shelf life of the food is generally extended. If you also package the food with a protective atmosphere inside, commonly referred to as MAP (Modified Atmosphere Packaging), you can achieve drastic increases in the shelf life and even less food needs to be wasted." The sustainability conversation regarding food packaging has, in the past, revolved a lot around reducing the material in the packaging itself, but now we are seeing a broader approach to the subject. "Although we need to continue working with efficient use of material in our packaging, we must never compromise on function. Food waste has a much bigger climate footprint than packaging and also costs the customer a lot of money. When we develop new food packaging solutions, the food must always be at the forefront. We constantly need to ask ourselves: how do we protect food in the best way? A packaging solution good for your business and for the planet

Now That's a Condiment! Our Catering Team is working hard to make sustainable change to their food service by helping to reduce single-use plastic and food waste. So they’ve teamed up with Rubies In The Rubble to replace our ketchup and mayo sachets with pump dispensers (pictured right). They’re looking at other sachets switches too, but this is a great first step.      As a third of all food waste is, well, wasted, Rubies in the Rubble uses produce that doesn’t quite fit the bill for supermarkets, such as curly cucumbers, gnarly 🥕, speckled 🍌, or tiny onions. The company says that their ketchup is made with direct-sourced fresh fruit and vegetables, and their mayo is made with aquafaba (nutrient-rich water from cooking chickpeas), which is usually thrown away.
