Like many others that preceded them, Paris 2024 Olympic organizers long ago promised to be the greenest Games ever. They might be just that. Organizers, in partnership with French company Le Pavé® , used 100 tonnes of recycled bottles and bottle caps (a million caps collected by 1,700 school kids) to make panels for 11,000 seats in the new Olympic Aquatic Centre, and used 18 tonnes of recycled plastic and plastic foam food containers to make 68 Olympic victory podiums (yes, that means Olympians will be awarded their medals while standing on trash). On a local scale, can you imagine what could be done if every hockey-playing youth in Canada were to return their jerseys after the season to be repurposed into a new product? Could these sweaters be repurposed into the medals and trophies these same kids get at the umpteen tourneys they attend? Could they be repurposed and re-sewn into the following year's jerseys? Made into pucks? Swag? Cowbells for enthusiastic (dare I say crazy) hockey moms and dads to cheer on their future McDavids, Crosbys, Poulins and Knights like mad? With two hockey-playing teens at home, we've got dozens and dozens of extra and useless old jerseys lying around. And we'd love to see them become something new. If anyone knows of such a program by Hockey Canada, the Canadian Hockey League, the Greater Toronto Hockey League, proud hockey sponsors like Canadian Tire Corporation and Scotiabank, or Canadian teams (I'm looking at you MLSE (Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Partnership)) please let me know. And if no such repurpose-hockey-jerseys-for-hockey program exists, let me know; maybe we should start one together. Looks like a good promotion on the surface but..... 'a UK-based water company' partnering with the World Athletics Indoor Championships Glasgow 24. I'm not convinced..... 1) Water comes out of a tap 🚰 Reusable bottles should be encouraged over single use containers. 2) The packaging - claims to be fully recyclable but looks like multi-materials so most recycling facilities aren't a huge fan. Also is it the best container if you take into account resource use, land use, water and carbon over the full life cycle??? Its important to understand all the elements, they state: - made solely of responsibly-sourced - ok how and where are they sourcing the materials? - renewable or recycled materials - how much? - which is fully recyclable - its multi-material so not optimal for recycling - carbon-neutral - means buying offsets - is it credible? Inspiring words yesterday from the European Parliament Chair of the #Transport Committee Karima Delli at the high level EU Conference on #Cycling: if we don't want people to be reluctant about the value of the #EuropeanUnion, the European Union must serve its citizens and support its industrial sectors, among which the #CyclingIndustry. It is a privilege to have such forward-looking politicians in Europe. A privilege as well to listen to the words of Belgium's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Mobility Georges Gilkinet: the minister has done a lot to bring altogether EU Member States to find an agreement in the Council of the European Union about the European Declaration on Cycling, and keeps on pushing to have 2025 as the official #YearOfCycling: I hope to see the EU Transport Ministers signing the European Cycling Declaration in the coming months. Last but not least, it was very good to see and listen to the European Commission, both DG MOVE and DG GROW: Herald Ruijters was very clear on the current and future role of the European Commission, to which I fully agree, and I am glad that DG Grow introduced the work done with CONEBI on the Mobility Transition Pathway for the EU Mobility Industrial Ecosystem: in one sentence, we need to insist on strong public-private synergies regarding key industrial policy pillars (among which legislation and funding) to concretely support #investments and #citizens in Europe. #eu2024be Confederation of the European Bicycle Industry - CONEBI

🗳 In the lead-up to the European Parliament elections, CIE is delighted to see our colleagues and members at Decathlon encouraging politicians to continue working for a circular, competitive and active EU through several key policy recommendations, including those outlined in the European Declaration on Cycling. 🚲 CIE also advocates for more concrete and binding measures to develop a sustainable, digitalized and circular European cycling manufacturing sector in line with the EU Green Deal goals. These objectives have been the primary focus of CIE’s Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability expert group, which allows the cycling industry to understand and improve areas such as environmental footprint, responsible sourcing and end-of-life treatment, thereby contributing to the circular economy! Sustainability news 🧡 As Wimbledon kicks off, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) is exploring ways to make tennis more sustainable by redesigning tennis balls. With a prototype featuring a polymer outer shell, the ITF aims to reduce the environmental impact of traditional rubber and felt balls. This initiative is part of a broader effort to innovate and extend the lifespan of tennis balls, potentially revising match rules to use fewer balls. #TeamMorvoren are competing in the J24 World Championships in Seattle, September 28th - October 5th 2024. In 2025 they also hope to compete in the World Championships to be held in Plymouth. They are seeking sponsorship to pay for competition costs (i.e. sail hire, local transport in Seattle and repairs / replacement parts for the boat - I hope not needed!). The sponsorship will not be used for personnel expenses such as flights and other travel. They are an all-women team from Saltash and Plymouth sailing clubs in the UK and between them have competed in over a dozen other events at this level. In folklore, mermaids are mysterious and powerful, often bringing about lively weather events when crossed by locals, usually men. We of course aren’t of folklore, but sailing still has gender imbalance and discrimination issues. Women in Sailing (WiS) highlighted this in a 2019 survey indicating that the majority of women in sailing have faced discrimination (59%). Through weekly racing, and practice on the Tamar River we offer anyone the chance to get on the water, learn to sail, and hone their skills, from newcomers to accomplished sailors, of all ages. Consequently, this is particularly important as the WiS survey also showed that discrimination experience rises to 71% for women 26-30 years old.
