Bringing buildings back to life Restoration of a listed building takes time - especially when the building has been abandoned for many years and is in poor condition. The building and structure need to be assessed historically and structurally in order to develop a comprehensive scheme for renovation. On this occasion this included site meetings with Heritage Consultants, Historic Carpentry Specialists and Planning Consultants to agree how best to preserve this fine 17th century farmhouse. While on spring break with my family last week, I had a striking perception about the treatment of historic buildings that stemmed from a sandcastle. •••••••••••••• We all can likely agree that we appreciate the creativity and craftsmanship of a sandcastle. The details and design from the mind of the builder. Often that mind is one of a child which I especially admire. I observed, first hand, that passersbys, go as far as redirecting their steps to make sure they don’t trample the sandcastle. ••••••••••••• This may seem mundane and straightforward, but here’s the architectural epiphany: Sandcastles are adored and there’s an understanding that you simple don’t destroy them for any reason. Also, a sandcastle is preserved as long as it’s standing. That’s the precedent that’s been set. Here’s the real hard fact: We treat sandcastles kinder than we do our historic built environment. #historicbuildings are the artwork of the built environment. #sandcastles are the artwork of the beach environment. •••••••••••••••••••• How can we treat our historic buildings as well as we treat our sandcastles? Can we teach passerbys to not trample on our historic buildings and to admire them the same way we admire a sandcastle? Yes, I realize there’s always a giant wave that can bring even the sturdiest sandcastle down. 🌊 ••••••••••••••••• I’m calling this architectural epiphany the Sandcastle Theory. I think we can relate the Sandcastle Theory to how we treat historic buildings and appreciate their design, craftsmanship, and importance in our world. Yes, it’s still in a discovery phase, but I think there’s merit to harnessing the consideration people have for sandcastles and place that same consideration towards historic buildings. ••••••••••••••••••••• There’s a gentleness that can be learned from a sandcastle for a historic building. #historicpreservation #thisplacematters
