PSA: NSW Police Phone app for domestic Violence Victim Survivors ‘Empower You’ App includes a private diary to record abuse or suspected abuse, a coded emergency signal feature which can also send their GPS location, simple connectivity to Triple Zero for emergencies AND links to local support services. Sometimes victims of domestic violence can wait until the abuse is severe enough before they report anything. This app gives members of the public a tool to privately track and record instances of abuse which they may not be ready to report or don’t think is serious enough to report. If the victim decides to go to the police they will have a record ready to go of historical abuse and prevents them from having to tell their story repeatedly and potentially missing key bits of information or accuracy of events. https://lnkd.in/gCb3SVwb

This National Child Protection Week, we’re urging young people to be considerate about sharing intimate images of themselves online and to make a report if it happens without their consent. It is illegal to share an explicit image or video of someone without their consent in Victoria – yet police are still seeing it occur, particularly among those under the age of 18. Figures from the Crime Statistics Agency show there were 310 intimate image-based offences involving victims under the age of 18 in the year to March 2024, compared to 251 the year prior. Detectives from the Sexual Offence and Child Abuse Investigation Teams (SOCIT) and Victorian Joint Anti-Child Exploitation Team (JACET) have been working tirelessly to investigate reports of the crime and support victims. In concerning trends identified by investigators, explicit photos and videos of underage students, shared with consent at the time, are later being further circulated online via social media to other students – this time without the person’s permission. Other cases can include young couples, who, after ending a relationship, might then intentionally share intimate images of the other party for revenge or other reasons, without that person’s consent. If you, the young person in your life, or anyone you know has had their intimate images shared without their consent – speak to police. If you do not wish to make a formal report, police can still assist you in seeking further support. Online forums like ReportCyber and the eSafety Commissioner are also available to make a report. In an emergency, always call Triple Zero (000). Read more: https://lnkd.in/g-4tXfht #familyviolence #childprotection #ncpw

In a 5-0 vote, the FCC recently adopted a regulation aimed at protecting domestic violence survivors' access to cell phones and giving survivors tools to escape dangerous living environments. This focus on family billing plans, is a victory for domestic and intimate partner violence victims and survivors, as well as their advocates. “Reliable, safe, and affordable connectivity is critical to survivors in or leaving a relationship involving domestic violence, human trafficking, and other related crimes or abuse,” the FCC stated in a release on the act from February. “This connectivity can assist survivors in leaving their abusers and finding and maintaining contact with family, social safety networks, and support services.” According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, almost all domestic violence survivors have experienced financial abuse, and three out of four stated that they stayed longer because of it. #leadership #legacyonpurpose #domesticabuse #domesticviolenceawareness #FCC #cellphone #connectivity #survivorstools #survivors

FLORIDA HUMAN TRAFFICKING A recent human trafficking operation in Florida, called “Operation Summer Shield,” resulted in 148 arrests and the recovery of seven victims, including two juvenile girls aged 17. Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister emphasized the importance of the operation, explaining that his team took a proactive approach ahead of the summer months when children have more free time and spend more time online. State Attorney Suzy Lopez reaffirmed Florida’s strict stance on human trafficking, highlighting that the mandatory minimum sentence for those convicted of human trafficking is life imprisonment. ❗ LinkedIn community - Urgent request - our homeless or justice involved veterans across the U.S. need a few minutes of your time today - please share this post so every law enforcement officer in the nation sees it. Your reaction and share could save a veteran's life! 💠 At the Veterans Justice Commission, Council on Criminal Justice, we are working with the VA Secretary's Office, Veteran Experience Office, in conducting research to determine why the veteran database is not being used by more law enforcement agencies to quickly identify veterans when law enforcement first makes contact with a veteran. 💠 Often times if they can identify a veteran they can work with the VA or NGOs in the community to divert the veteran away from justice involvement. 💠 Very few law enforcement agencies are using this service at first contact, arrest or booking. ⁉ Please share this far and wide and please message me the names of agencies, a POC, and contact information, of someone our researchers can talk to about why they are not using the system. SQUARES https://lnkd.in/gFD2hECN Status Query and Response Exchange System (SQUARES) is a VA web application that provides VA employees and external organizations (homeless service community partners, law enforcement partners (police departments, sheriff departments, courts, and jails) local, state and federal agencies with reliable, detailed information about Veteran eligibility. There are some signs and indicators someone might be being trafficked. If you are aware of the signs, you can help a victim of human trafficking. Common causes of kidnapping include ransom demands, extortion, human trafficking, political motives, revenge, custody disputes, terrorism, and various criminal activities. Preventing kidnapping is a critical concern, especially when it comes to safeguarding children and ensuring personal safety. Here are some tips to help prevent kidnapping: 1. Stay #Alert: Be aware of your surroundings at all times and trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, it's better to be cautious. 2. #Avoid Dangerous Situations: Try to stay away from risky or isolated areas, especially at night. Stick to well-lit and populated places. 3. Be #Cautious Online: Avoid sharing personal information on social media platforms that could make you or your family vulnerable to potential kidnappers. 4. Establish Safety #Protocols: Have a family safety plan in place, including emergency contact numbers and designated safe places to go in case of an emergency. 5. Teach Children #Safety: Educate children about safety measures, including not talking to strangers, recognizing dangerous situations, and what to do if they feel threatened. 6. Use the Buddy #System: Encourage children and even adults to travel in pairs or groups, especially in unfamiliar or potentially risky situations. 7. Vary Your #Routine: Avoid establishing predictable patterns in your daily routine that could make you an easy target for kidnappers. 8. #Secure Your Home: Ensure that your home is well-secured with locks on doors and windows to prevent unauthorized entry. 9. #Trustworthy Adults: Teach children to seek help from trusted adults, such as teachers, police officers, or parents of friends, if they feel unsafe or threatened. 10. #Emergency Communication: Have a way to quickly contact emergency services if needed, and teach children how to make emergency calls. Remember, prevention is key when it comes to kidnapping. By being proactive and taking necessary precautions, you can reduce the risk of such incidents occurring. #kidnappingprevention #childsafety #personalprotection
