Big fire spread with terrifying speed. 🔥 💔🙏 (Homes and businesses are gone) No words can describe the heartbreak. This is the most destructive fire in Los Angeles' history. Homes Schools Theatres Restaurants Supermarkets Wild animals ... are gone Memories erased in the flames And entire neighborhoods burned to the ground. Neighbors, friends, and colleagues have lost everything, leaving families displaced and communities shattered. The financial impact could be more than $55 billion. Some of the communities that are grappling with the devastation of the blazes in California are: Sylmar Altadena Pasadena Pacific Palisades and Hollywood Just to name a few, here are LinkedIn members who were affected: Tony Rindsberg Maryna Aviva Katz and many more... In the face of unimaginable loss, it's hard to see beyond the ashes. But even in the darkest moments, remember this: your strength is greater than you realize. What you’ve lost is devastating, but what you carry within you—your courage, resilience, and the love of those around you—remains unshaken. Our hearts go out to the brave emergency responders, police, and firefighters who are working tirelessly to contain LA Fire and protect lives. Leveraging innovation, technology, and creativity, we can tackle or manage future wildfires with smarter solutions, stronger awareness, and more resilient communities. If you were impacted, you are not alone. We stand with you, ready to help you piece together a new beginning. Stay safe. 💛 #wildfires #innovation #management #technology #creativity #inspiration #california #hollywood #police ♻️ Repost to raise awareness during such tough times. ✅ Follow Thomas Gutwa for more.

We've known southern California cities are fire prone for decades. Preparing and mitigating the scale of eventual disaster was never made a priority of California government. What the producers said could happen tomorrow, happened last week. The whole documentary series from the early 2000s is a useful guide to emergency preparation for community resiliency. https://lnkd.in/gxG_Enc6

It's with a heavy heart that we've witnessed the devastation in southern California with the recent wildfires. It does feel too soon to push any agenda, as many are still suffering and will be for quite some time. In the future, there will be an opportunity to pick up the pieces, and I believe that Hempitecture and other resilient building methods can play a part in the effort to rebuild. We will find a way to offer support to those affected, as I believe other colleagues in the building materials, architectural, and construction worlds will as well. As with other disasters, we often see the pattern of rebuilding with the same methods that fell susceptible to destruction. Often, there are the elements of costs and eagerness to return to normalcy, which drive the decision making towards replication: a wood frame structure is toppled by hurricane force winds, or tornadoes, or scorched by wildfire. In its place, the same structure is recreated, standing susceptible yet again. Perhaps this disaster provides an inflection point to build better, build differently, and build more resiliently. Only time will tell. However we can't be tone deaf to the fact that rebuilding is costly, some people have already lost everything. Methods that cost more money, while being more resilient, may be overlooked. What if insurance companies began taking a closer look at the potential savings of more resilient methods? What if states and the federal government helped drive forward more resilient methods to align with conventionally accepted costs of building-as-usual? What savings could be realized in the long run, when we escape a cycle of short term thinking and in its place, emphasize resiliency? In 2020, Hempitecture helped build a home in Texas that had to be 100% Class A, as it was rural and no hydrants were available. We helped guide the client towards a hempcrete envelope, and even conducted the first ASTM E84 test in the United States, that showed hempcrete is 100% fireproof, with a flame spread of 0 and a smoke index of 0. It is possible, but at the time, it was costly. Again, I don't believe this is the time to say "Let's rebuild California with hempcrete." This isn't the only option, there is Durisol North America, Faswall, B.Public Prefab , Onx Homes, and many more that offer viable solutions. A rebuilding effort of this scale can't rely on only 1 solution, it has to be comprised of many. Ultimately, I hope that those who have a seat at the table can help guide a transition to thinking and doing differently, with an eye towards resiliency.

Today, I heard about another tragic shooting. It’s truly despicable that we live in a world where such events have become almost commonplace. There’s something called catastrophic coverage—a policy designed to protect against the worst-case scenarios. It’s heartbreaking that we even have to consider this kind of coverage in response to these horrific situations. While it’s essential for organizations to be prepared for the worst, we must remember: a building can be blown away and rebuilt, but a human life is irreplaceable. I pray for those affected and their families. May they be under God's eye and find comfort in His presence. We need to push for better solutions, safer communities, and a world where people, not just buildings, are truly protected. #SafetyFirst #Community #Preparedness #ValueLife

Really glad the inimitable Fred Jacobs is among those leading the cheer for radio’s critical role when disasters strike. But the hard fact is that many stations - especially mom and pops in small places - just don’t have the wherewithal now to keep their plants on the air and provide the kind of 24/7 coverage necessary during these events. Truth is, even some big clusters don’t have them, either. I can help fix that. And teach you how community resilience can be a revenue generator long before a crisis. The first step..is reaching out. https://lnkd.in/euHn8jWr
