Exciting news to share as we grow in Additive Manufacturing at ATI!

I’m looking forward to presenting at the upcoming 7th Submarine Institute of Australia Submarine Science, Technology and Engineering Conference (SubSTEC7) 2023 ‘From Collins to SSN’ at the Adelaide Convention Centre – nice to be in my home city for a change!   My talk and paper, co-authored with my friend and colleague Ben Heard, “Concepts of oversight and safety” discusses the ways in which our AUKUS partners address oversight, and the importance of cultural understanding.  The associated paper presents a comparative discussion of the US and UK models of oversight in their naval nuclear propulsion programs, having examined the history and development thereof, as well as what that means in the Australian context. Both the US and UK programs have achieved a nuclear safety record that should be the envy of any government or corporate organization, with no significant nuclear incidents for either party. They do this by approaching oversight with significantly different philosophies, and it’s been interesting to compare the two approaches. You don’t have to be UK-based to take advantage of our facilities!   The AMRICC Centre is supporting Lucideon teams in the US with a complex evaluation of a Nickel-based superalloy’s thermal diffusivity and expansion, undertaken as part of a partnership with the Naval Nuclear Laboratory to develop mission-critical technology for the U.S. Navy nuclear-powered fleet.   The work supports research into the Hot Isostatic Press (HIP) process, which uses high pressure and elevated temperatures to densify materials.   The AMRICC Centre’s extensive range of design, manufacturing, and analysis kit has an impressive array of capabilities for early prototyping and development trials, the production of trial batches, and other industrial uses. Ike White joined National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and Naval Reactors leaders on Capitol Hill to testify before the Senate Subcommittee on Strategic Forces Committee on Armed Services on their missions and commitments supporting U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s FY 2025 budget request.   In White’s opening statement, he emphasized EM’s commitment to cleaning up the environmental legacy of national defense programs that helped end World War II and the Cold War, stating that, “while our mission is rooted in the past, we’re focused on the future.”   White’s testimony highlights EM’s 35 years of progress, transformational results, steady progress planned for FY 2025, support for national security missions and how EM is investing in the future. The budget request allows for continued improvement to the rigor of program and project management, as well as opportunities to progress cleanup safely and more efficiently,   EM appreciates the Biden administration’s commitment to our vital mission. Whether you are managing the nuclear reactor plant or driving the vessel through the depths of the sea, you’re always leading by example. Every decision is a reflection of your judgment, so you must have the courage to trust it. Ultimately, it is your job to manage your team and help keep your missions on track. Submarine #Officers are involved in all aspects of submarine operations, from supervising the reactor plant to running the ship both in port and at sea. You could be in charge of any of the following: ⚙️ Operating a nuclear reactor, power generation, and propulsion systems 🛠️ Maintaining onboard weapons systems 🔧 Managing all life support systems 🗺️ Driving the ship and charting its position 📡 Operating sonar, radar, fire control, communications, and specialized mission equipment Additionally, Submarine Officers who choose to continue their time as a submariner can earn up to an additional $40,000/year as a Department Head. As a Submarine Officer, you will also earn eventual qualification as Prospective Nuclear Engineering Officer (#PNEO) – a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) certification recognized by the civilian nuclear power industry and an impressive item for your résumé following your time in the Navy. Submarine Officers are exposed to a variety of different work environments, from academic classroom settings to training on prototype units, to sea tours and shore assignments. Deployments on Navy submarines last a few to several months and include conducting missions vital to national security. How powerful is a Vanguard submarine? 177 free-fall thermonuclear weapons during March 1998, the four Vanguard submarines are the sole platforms for the United Kingdom's nuclear weapons. Each submarine is armed with up to 16 UGM-133 Trident II missiles. The class is scheduled to be replaced starting in the early 2030s with the Dreadnought-class submarine.
