Patient safety remains the number one priority for all independent healthcare providers, and World Patient Safety Day – set up by the World Health Organization to “bring about global solidarity and concerted action to improve patient safety” – is always a fantastic opportunity to reflect on what is happening in the sector to ensure patients get the best possible care. This year’s theme is “Improving diagnosis for patient safety”with the slogan“Get it right, make it safe!” – highlighting the critical importance of correct and timely diagnosis in ensuring patient safety and improving health outcomes. This is a hugely important, albeit often overlooked, element of patient safety. Indeed, you can’t provide safe, high quality treatment without an accurate diagnosis. And getting that diagnosis requires amongst other things, an accurate clinical history, timely tests and investigations and two-way communication between the clinician and the patient and/or their representative. KIMSHEALTH HOSTS PANEL ON WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION’S WORLD PATIENT SAFETY DAY On WHO’s World Patient Safety Day (September 17,2024), KIMSHEALTH hosted a panel discussion focused on this year’s theme: Improving Diagnosis for Patient Safety. Moderated by Dr.Sheriff M. Sahadulla MD, SFHM, FRCP, Group CEO of KIMSHEALTH, the panel brought together expert doctors from various specialties to discuss how patient safety impacts their respective fields. Topics included assessing the patient through history taking, examination, identifying appropriate, cost effective diagnostic investigations, practicing a multi-disciplinary approach, how biases can affect decision making, and why effective communication is paramount in patient safety. The discussion started with the patient safety principle of “first do no harm” and went on to highlight the critical role of accurate diagnosis in ensuring better patient outcomes. On March 8, 2024, U.S. Reps. Nanette Barragán (CA-44) and Dr. Michael Burgess (TX-26), members of the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health, reintroduced the National Patient Safety Board Act (H.R. 7591), legislation that would establish a National Patient Safety Board (NPSB), a nonpunitive, collaborative, and independent board within the Department of Health and Human Services to address safety in health care modeled in part after successful entities in the transportation industry. This landmark legislation is a critical step to improve safety for patients and healthcare providers by coordinating existing efforts within a single independent agency solely focused on addressing patient safety in health care.
