Basel Healthtech 2024 Conference review A big thanks to MTIP, Stifel Financial Corp. and Candesic for an excellent Basel Healthtech 2024 conference, which was held for the first time last week.  The two-day conference was a resounding success, with a highly energising and informative mix of health tech startups / scaleups, investors, pharmaceutical companies and advisors across healthcare and clinical research.   I very much enjoyed being part of a panel discussing Clinical Velocity: Fast Tracking Clinical Development and how technology can help speed up clinical trial feasibility (Maya Zlatanova from HealthTap), recruitment (Matt Walz from TrialBee and April Monge from Novartis) and my focus on engaging patients in their journey to power high rates of eCOA/ePRO compliance.  The conversation, guided by Rana Lonnen from Novartis and with Alex Russell from Takeda’s digital health expertise, was notable everyone’s the shared focus on designing and executing studies with participants at the centre of the thought process.  A message of always putting people-first and never tech-first!   A number of investor panels highlighted the current challenging financial environment, but were positive in the continued high growth potential in the industry.  By delivering true impact and value for healthcare providers and pharmaceutical sponsors, investors were confident that great companies will succeed and thrive.   One final point - any conference taking place now must have a fair dose of discussion about AI.  True to form, generative AI featured in most panels, as there is huge potential to improve, enhance and disrupt how healthcare and research is being delivered.  I’m personally excited about the opportunity AI presents to help clinical trial speed and effectiveness, and there’s certainly more to come from uMotif in this space in 2024.    Conference panellists were likewise excited about AI and often expressed a sentiment that if a company isn’t thinking about it now, they are likely to fall behind. However, there was a good deal of pragmatism about where and how AI can be used, and that in some areas the hype outstrips reality.  In addition to some great use cases in imaging, there were also good use cases in using AI to automate and improve more ‘mundane’ processes to speed things up and augment a human process.   So after a stimulating few days of meeting up with old friends and making new ones, the conference left me feeling even more pumped up for the coming 12 months and our continued growth on making a tangibly positive impact for sponsors, investigators and – most of all – patients.

Excited to share that Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine is collaborating with Odyssey Therapeutics to leverage the power of #artificialintelligence and #machinelearning to advance the discovery and optimization of small molecule medicines against multiple therapeutic targets.   #AI is increasingly playing a key role in #drugdiscovery, enabling us to identify novel targets, more rapidly and efficiently identify the most promising molecules to advance into clinical development, and design and optimize molecules across multiple parameters in ways previously only possible through resource-intensive efforts in the wet lab. Despite significant unmet medical needs in female-associated diseases, funding research and development (R&D) in this area have been historically limited. To foster innovation, this paper proposes a comprehensive approach, including policy making, public investment, and collaborative efforts, inspired by successful models in other fields such as orphan drug development.

I prefer building and operating within a "big-tent" philosophy that welcomes others with common interests and goals to collaborate. When achieving the objective is complex and requires the engagement of various distinct stakeholders, it can be essential to success. Certainly, #DrugDiscovery and #DrugDevelopment fits that description. While small backpacking tents (to continue the analogy) can enable a smaller load and maneuverability, it's a trade-off. You lose durability, weather protection, and comfort. Similarly, smaller therapeutic R&D teams can pivot quickly. Still, they may struggle to tread the path since they may need more niche yet valuable expertise about the trail ahead (especially for new modalities, rare diseases, and other less mature areas). Along those lines, I encourage you to watch this webinar: "Industry-Academia Partnerships: Designing the Future of Medicine," hosted by Jesse McQuarters from STAT. Within, Calum MacRae, MD, PhD, (VC, Scientific Innovation at Brigham and Women’s Hospital)), Andrew Mortlock, PhD, (EVP, Early Development, Astellas Pharma), Tadaaki Taniguchi, MD, PhD, (CMO, Astellas Pharma) discuss their approach to academic and industry collaborations.  Though the team shared many great thoughts, I wanted to share a few points that stood out. 1. It's critical to know exactly why you want to work together early. 2. Strive to keep the relationship from being overly transactional. 3. Success depends on solid communication and open channels. 4.
