Which came first, TGIF or TGI Fridays?     With #TCOP moving downtown soon, I’m looking forward to the new activity it will bring, including revealing new third places for us to connect!🤝      Ever heard of a #thirdplace? I only learned the term a year or so ago, but it is the place where people spend their time outside of home (first place) and work (second place). Sociologist Ray Oldenburg coined the term and describes third places as the spaces where we exchange ideas, have a good time, and build relationships. On TV it's the Central Perk couch on Friends, or the place where everybody knows your name (Cheers). I’m a millennial, so my third places always seem to revolve around coffee.☕     Coffee Culture at UF, Spaddy’s Coffee Co. at USF, Distant Worlds Coffeehouse or Cafe Solstice in Seattle. Nowadays you can find me at Kahwa, Buddy Brew, or the upstairs break room on campus, grabbing a quick espresso with a dash of salted caramel syrup. These are places where I get to run into a familiar face and catch-up from our last run-in, or meet someone new and connect over our favorite ways to drink coffee, before going back to work or making the journey home for the day.      As a member of the Office of Student Affairs, I wonder about which places our #FuturePharmacists will choose as their weekly meet-up spot after a difficult exam or where they will pass the time while waiting out a Tampa afternoon rainstorm.⛈     So, where are your third places? **Did you know who came up with the idea of PICNIC first?** 🌺Well, I got to know the answer when one of my colleagues, in the last activity 'the Googly Round', asked this question during our departmental picnic. 🌺Yesterday, when I went for the picnic with my colleagues, I wasn’t expecting a day I wouldn’t forget easily. We played games, participated in various activities, ate together, and had so much fun. It was a feast I wouldn’t say no to ever. 🌺We got to meet people with whom we were only connected through emails. Putting faces to the email addresses was the highlight for me of that exceptionally invigorating event. 🌺To summarize the elysian day in a passage is a bit difficult. All in all, each and every corner of the venue reverberated with our laughter and the rhythm of our footsteps. 🌺A picnic is a successful way to bring people together. But it’s not the only way. In this learning bite, let’s discuss what other ways we can bring camaraderie to the workplace. 🌺P.S. The answer to the question is that the mention can be found in a 1649 satirical French poem, which features the Frères Pique-nicques, known for visiting friends “armed with bottles and dishes.” Later in the early 1800s, the term and the practice made a hop to Britain. What's a work picnic? My 5th grade teacher, Ms. U, excelled at incorporating life lessons into her daily teaching. One of her famous teaching tools was that of a work picnic. Work picnics were something of a legend and rite of passage in my school. Wondering what a work picnic is? It's quite simple. It's working before picnicking in the park. At its essence, a work picnic is the lesson of "work before play." Here's how my teacher did just that. She taught us to: 🍎 Prepare to work. A few times in the spring semester we gathered our books, lunches, and sports equipment and head down to the local park. 🍎 Focus on our work. We laid out some blankets, sat down, and studiously worked from 9:00 AM until 12:00 PM. 🍎 Celebrate our success. It was time to picnic! We enjoyed our lunches, treats, and games all afternoon long until it was time to go home.  I thought of this experience today as I wrapped up some work. It's a wonderful memory, and even more powerful lesson that even the most mundane of experiences have something to teach us. How do you reward yourself after a job well done? Do you know what the best work break ever is? Walking to your garden, picking fresh vegetables (and a few weeds), and soaking up some sunshine. I've been doing this every day this summer, and with the changing season I'm going to miss it the most! To Zoo or to Zoom, that is the question ... To everyone still sitting on the fence about whether to come along to #CULTUREBites, now is the time to decide.
