Europe must play to win—not just play nice—in a new space race. You may not know this about me, but I'm a sucker for astrophysics and all things space, and today, I'd like to share some Communication Lessons from Space 🚀 ✨ About two weeks ago, the European Space Agency (ESA) announced that the Ariane 6 rocket is set for its debut launch this coming July. After numerous delays and a crisis of confidence, ESA has revamped its communication strategy, providing regular, detailed updates to member states and the public. This transparency has been crucial in restoring trust and managing expectations. Here are three key PR lessons we can draw from this: 1. Transparency is Key: ESA's shift to regular, detailed updates transformed a potential PR disaster into a success story. Clear and honest communication helps manage stakeholder expectations and builds trust.    2. Collaborative Communication: The coordinated effort between ESA, Arianespace, and CNES showcases the power of unified messaging. Ensuring all parties are aligned and communicate consistently can prevent misinformation and confusion. 3. Crisis Management: Proactive communication during a crisis is essential. By acknowledging issues and detailing steps being taken to address them, you can maintain credibility and control the narrative. For any organization, adopting these strategies can significantly improve public perception and stakeholder confidence. Signed and sealed: Envision can move towards construction 👏 Today, ESA awarded a contract to Thales Alenia Space to build the Envision spacecraft. The contract signing, which took place at the 17th European Space Conference in Brussels, Belgium, kicks off the industrial development of the mission. In collaboration with the Envision team, TAS will now finalise the spacecraft design and begin its construction. “We are thrilled to partner with Thales Alenia Space on this groundbreaking new mission to Venus. No other mission has ever attempted such a comprehensive investigation of our remarkably inhospitable neighbour. Envision will answer fundamental questions about how a planet becomes habitable – or the opposite,” declared Professor Carole Mundell, ESA's Director of Science. Over the course of the week, we commenced a remarkable journey with Phemotron Systems on #SpaceEducationinAfrica. Space education has remained at the forefront of our intervention, and we are delighted to embark on this collaboration journey.   It is indeed a moment of great news both organizations, yet a call to more responsibility, accountability, and, of course, broadening the scope of space education, which is crucial in meeting #Agenda2063 aspirations of the #AfricanUnion.   As we begin this laudable step, we remain resolute and committed to ensuring we harness the potential embedded in the African space industry, giving young people and institutions the opportunity to embrace space exploration and space technology for sustainable development and the jobs of the future. European Space Agency - ESA & JAXA: Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. ESA is in Tokyo to discuss the future of space cooperation with JAXA and to participate in NIHONBASHI SPACE WEEK. ESA and JAXA have a long history of strong partnership, having launched significant joint missions like BepiColombo to study Mercury and EarthCARE to understand climate regulation. We signed a Next Big Cooperations statement, laying important stepping stones for a future aimed at deepening collaboration in space and Earth science, human and robotic exploration, and planetary defense.

ESA is in Tokyo to discuss the future of space cooperation with JAXA: Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and to participate in Nihonbashi Space Week. ESA and JAXA have a long history of strong partnership, having launched significant joint missions like BepiColombo to study Mercury and EarthCARE to understand climate regulation. We signed a Next Big Cooperations statement, laying important stepping stones for a future aimed at deepening collaboration in space and Earth science, human and robotic exploration, and planetary defense. While #CM25 will be ESA's funding mechanism to initiate this cooperation, given the urgent timeline we have agreed to start the study of potential cooperation for ESA’s Rapid Apophis Mission for Space Safety (RAMSES) mission, which aims to explore the asteroid Apophis passing close to Earth in 2029. Read the full press release here with more details about the potential for collaboration 👉 https://lnkd.in/eUqbVjVz   ESA also signed a Letter of Intent with Japanese space innovation company CrossU to drive commercialization, business incubation, and the development of robust space ecosystems, bridging the physical gap between Japan and Europe. Finally, I addressed attendees at the Opening Ceremony of Nihonbashi Space Week 2024. Nihonbashi is a financial district in Tokyo that is burgeoning as a hub of Japan’s space industry – what an incredible atmosphere and energy here. A heartfelt thank you to JAXA President Dr. Yamakawa Hiroshi, Professor Shinichi Nakasuka, the CrossU team, and Mitsui Fudosan for their incredible support in welcoming the ESA delegation this week.

It is a privilege to celebrate Poland’s first technological and scientific mission to the International Space Station—an achievement that underscores Poland’s growth as an emerging space nation and its role as a trusted partner in ESA’s programmes. This mission highlights the power of international collaboration and ESA’s commitment to advancing technological expertise through commercial access to space. Together, we are preparing for a future beyond Low Earth Orbit, showcasing Poland’s capabilities and the strength of our shared ambitions. I extend my gratitude to the Ministry of Economic Development and Technology for their trust in ESA. The Ignis mission, part of Axiom Space Mission 4 (#Ax4), will see the participation of ESA project astronaut and mission specialist, Slawosz Uznanski, who will make history as the second Pole in space and first to the station.
