Beckers' Commitment to Sustainability: A Net Zero Future We are thrilled to announce that Beckers has become the first coil coatings company to commit to net-zero emissions by 2050, aligning with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). We have already made significant progress by reducing our absolute CO2e emissions in our own operations (scope 1 and 2) by 51% between 2013 and 2023. But we know that true success requires collective action. More than 98% of our emissions result from our customers and suppliers (scope 3), which is why we must collaborate with our entire value chain. Join us in celebrating this milestone and stay tuned for more updates as we continue to transition into a business with a lower climate impact and transform how we collaborate with value chain partners. I'm happy to share that Beckers Group has officially joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)! This is a huge step for us, showing our commitment to reducing the environmental impact of not just our operations, but also helping our customers and suppliers do the same. The fact that 98% of our emissions are in scope 3 (raw materials we buy, and the operations of our customers and suppliers) makes this commitment essential for collaborating all along the value chain! What is SBTi? The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global body enabling businesses to set ambitious emissions reductions targets in line with the latest climate science. It is focused on accelerating companies across the world to halve emissions before 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions before 2050.

Every year that passes, my vitriol for APR grows. This group lobbies to block solutions for eliminating plastic pollution all in order to save itself – period, it’s not about the environment, or god forbid sustainability - good grief, far from it. It’s a power play for them, I can’t believe they’ve gotten away with it for so long, but kudos – I guess. But it’s the useful idiots in this industry that profess to be “sustainability experts” that are beholden to this racket. Beholden, despite 70 yrs. of utter failure in playing a minuscule role in simply (trying to) extend the life of plastics, it’s not even an end-of-life solution (i.e. not circular). They want you to ignore any basic objective analysis, both environmental and economic, and focus on new words like “innovation” and “advancements”, and of course more money, more regulations, more money, more regulations, and so on. We are flooding countries with trash, countries with dismal waste management practices (and in turn our waters) all under the guise of Recycling. As a taxpayer, I’ve never seen an industry so propped-up and yet they continue to deliver nothing every year, year after year. We are jeopardizing everything for this charade and the new “how-2-recycle” logos aren’t going to help either. For those that see it and want to take accountability, not pollute the planet, should know that we are sending the vast majority of our plastic waste to highly engineered and strictly regulated facilities, especially here in the United States. The naysayers will start whining about methane and that landfills are “bad places” but that’s Bad Sustainability (BS). Don’t believe the BS, what our landfills are doing to reduce GHG and convert to Renewable Energy (RNG) has been nothing short of amazing and the environmental and economic returns are impressive, which is why billions of dollars are actively invested in these projects - everywhere. The scale, practice and return value of this infrastructure to help manage plastic waste dwarfs recycling. Which is why APR intentionally blurs the landscape about biodegradation, clumping everything together and telling the cronies to push back on this blasphemous thought. I imagine so, because biodegradation matters and by making sure the performance of plastic coincides with the primary managed waste system where everyone inherently sends plastic waste, could be a significant blow to its relevance and regulatory stranglehold. “It’s okay to make toothpaste tubes ‘Recycle Ready’ but DO NOT design it for Landfill Gas-to-Energy recovery…you never know, we might get around to recycling it” – stop it. Common sense needs to prevail in sustainability, we’re getting bamboozled by this group and others. I hope those that want to truly address the problem of "plastic pollution" and not the "recycling plastics" problem begin to change the narrative for a better/cleaner tomorrow. Otherwise, this Trojan horse called APR will bury us in our own waste.
Scott Trenor, APR’s Technical Director, is focused on the incremental improvements that make a big difference. Whether it's enhancing mechanical recycling processes or driving transparency in the industry, Scott’s leadership is a key part of APR’s mission to create a truly circular economy. APR is proud of the incredible work that Scott Trenor, brings to the table. Read about his journey and the path ahead for plastic recyclers. https://ow.ly/iZJN50TNafM
