Hiring solely based on skill? BIG mistake. Humans are a lot more than what they do. Someone who has brilliant video editing skills, might have completely different values from you. Even if they can make the most amazing edits. They are not able to showcase YOU. A great video editor isn’t necessarily the most skilled one. It’s someone who: ◖ Is a good communicator ◖ Loves & gets your vision ◖ Uses effective systems ◖ Keeps to a schedule Hire someone who loves what you do and how you do it. When I got my first client 2.5 years ago, I was a total newbie when it came to editing. But because I loved what my client was doing, it made me work so much harder. One of my bosses told me not to focus on techniques. They can be learned on the internet. You can google it anytime like, "How to face-track?", "How do I add transitions?" etc. Instead, focus on the concept, purpose and making the video seamless. That's how you make a great video edit.

There is always a process to hire video editors. Right? Every company has its own way of finding who does the best. From applications, skill tests to interviews, these are some usuals most companies follow to get a rough idea while shortlisting candidates. But most companies ask editors to do these tests unpaid. They send footage and give editors a deadline of roughly 2-3 days. Now imagine, editors put in hours into a project, only to face rejection. While rejection is fine, they get no compensation for the time and effort they have put in. This is where the problem is. Unpaid tests are unfair. Editors are investing their all and they deserve compensation, even if they don’t get selected. Just because they’re not hired doesn’t mean their time is less valuable. Instead of exploiting you need to respect their effort. And I have personally seen that this practice is much more common in India as compared to any other country. This is why we have done things differently at Binge Labs. When we ask for a test, we make it clear upfront that it is a paid test. If they’re putting in the work, they’re getting compensated, whether they’re hired or not. It’s about respect and valuing their time. Video Editors that I have come across are of largely of two kinds: >First who tap and twirl around their PC only sticking to the copy/script. They will even copy the "(Suggestion to the Video Editor) " part. Please understand :annoying people' cannot be a great career choice. Come at me whateves. >Second Ones: They are storytellers. They understand the power of editing videos, and they nail it. They are capable of making such influential content, understanding briefs, molding the copy (lil tweaks here and there are cool only.) and carrying the urge to create "mind blowing" content every damn time. Looking out for the second ones. Obviously. Professional video marketers will have their finger always on the pulse of what's changing in terms of viewing habits, buyer perceptions, etc. Their livelihood depends on it. 3. Cameras are evolving fast. Meaning you'll have to budget for updating your hardware and software. 4. Your needs for creating video will fluctuate. Re-skilling and upskilling takes time and costs money. All while you continue to pay salaries. 𝐈𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐦𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐥𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝? Yes there is. By splitting the videos into two types. Daily and strategic videos. ➤ 𝐃𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐨𝐬: Train your existing staff to record their own videos. They'll learn a new life skill. And the unpolished accounts of your staff will make your brand feel more human. What’s the craziest job combo you've ever had? Let me tell you about mine.  Since I have started working on my startup, I have worn so many hats that I have lost count now. To name a few, I was: - A Software engineer, coding my ideas into working features. - A QA engineer, finding bugs in my own code (and hating myself for it!). - Of Course a product manager ( A job title i always loved) - Product marketer to write the perfect pitch to customers. ( Never thought i’d take up this one) - Office cleaner, well you do need a clean space to work. - Recruiter / HR : Conducting interviews, managing employee onboardings (Yes, I was even the guy doing the hiring paperwork!). - Video Editor / Graphic designer / Video Scriptwriter. The worst role of all? A lawyer! I reviewed all my employees' contracts and SLAs with my clients. Did I like doing all of this? Maybe some because I was already good at them. Others, I only wished I had the money to hire someone. But here’s the thing, All these roles have given me exposure, which has helped me grow. A while back, I posted a video encouraging those, who believe they’re really good at what they do, to try entrepreneurship. Even if you fail, you learn valuable skills and increase your market value. If you’re exceptionally good at what you do but hesitate to take the leap,  just re-read this post. You’ll only become more valuable to the industry, whether your startup fails or succeeds. You’ll be the winner in any case.

If someone asks me for a job without a resume... I'll never hesitate to take them on. Because resumes are dead. They all look the same and are stuffed with exaggerated achievements. So here's what you should zero in on while hiring high performers: Their personal brand. Hiring someone in the marketing department? → Look for someone who consistently breaks down top strategies and gives their two cents on the latest trends. Hiring a sales head? → Look for someone who analyses successful campaigns and shares their thought process Hiring a video editor? → Look for someone who has a portfolio of edited reels online. You'll find your A players when you stop chasing the flashiest resume and start hiring based on their personal brand.
