I've spent the past couple weeks digging into different investment firms, learning about their Founders, Partners, Values, and of course portfolios. One has really stood out - RareBreed Ventures McKeever (Mac) Conwell,II could not have picked a better name for his firm. Just read through The RareBreed Manifesto on their website to understand why they are so "rare". Number ii stood out the most: "Some of these entrepreneurs are building products and serving communities that many traditional VCs do not understand or are not willing to understand. This leads to many missed opportunities to fund great companies" This is so true. Unfortunately, the lack of understanding doesn't stop many of them from just throwing cash (although a little more rare today). I've seen a lot of investors throw cash at founders and basically just walk away. Why? Bc they weren't truly invested. SOME of these founders still make it. Many do not. This is a terrible disconnect that needs fixing. Founders need REAL investors. Be more like Mac and his Partners!

Exciting times in the market as fundraising momentum finally improves in Australia! Archangel Ventures has had three portfolio companies raising substantial rounds recently: InvestorHub ($9M), Primary ($3.5M) and Restoke.ai ($5.1M). We've been fortunate to back the founders since the early stages of their journey. As the market heats up, some founders are finding themselves in the enviable position of having multiple funding options ie choices 😎. When evaluating the options its important to split out three main considerations: 1) speed of raising 2) valuation 3) who leads / is included in the investment round.* I've had multiple conversations with founders in the last few weeks as they work through their priorities and the relative trade-offs. It's unrealistic to expect a perfect fit on all these factors. Alternative term sheets and configurations need careful evaluation (including the likelihood of completing a transaction - yes we are seeing VCs walk away from signed term sheets). 🤔 The relative importance of these three factors likely differs for each company, especially if you're imminently cash flow issues. In situations where Archangel is an existing investor (ie trying to remove some of my bias as an investor) I'd tend to rate the priority order: 3, 1, 2. Why?: * Business is about relationships and trust - fundamentally I want to see good coinvestors able to add value and shepherd the founder through the next stage. * A relatively quick process is in the interests of all parties to avoid founder distraction and a good investor shouldn't let things drag out ie they know what they are doing. * While we all like a good valuation uplift, a good investor isn't likely to lowball a founder anyway. What do you think? * I've simplified the decision making framework a bit and there are obviously some other considerations including other deal terms and the amount of capital that can be raised on those terms.

We expect that to continue. ‘VC’ to me means calculated risks and being flexible to adapt approaches ‘VC’ to me means doing right by the ecosystem for its longevity ‘VC’ to me is delivering returns ethically with a nett positive for everyone ‘VC’ to me means giving back when we’ve succeeded There are many general partners I respect and consistently test our ideas with. I believe we’ve found gems in a class of startups in the region. What people label us is not important to us. Our mission remains the same: -Seed the next generation of regional and global champions -Deliver strong returns/ DPIs -Collectively build a strong and unique venture ecosystem in Southeast Asia. 🔥 There is a new pre-seed fund in town 🔥 When funding is tight, it’s great to see some fresh and innovative new players arising. BackBone Ventures just announced the final closing of its 5502 Fund. The EUR20m pre-seed fund finances underrepresented founders when they start their entrepreneurial journey. When sourcing and picking their investments, Philippe, Jan Claudio, Miklos, Janic and Louis-Paul focus on four key parameters: 👫 Full focus on founders: the 5502 Fund invests in founders that have a history of outperforming their competition in academia and previous jobs despite being structurally underrepresented because of their background or gender. 🌍 While the fund can invest all across Europe it strongly focuses on Germany and Switzerland. 📈 The fund strictly invests in pre-seed only, i.e. in the first investment round, aiming to lead it as the first institutional investor. 👩💻 No specific industry focus: the fund can invest in any high growth business model. Ideally the founders already have experience in the industry they want to disrupt. The 5502 fund will invest EUR300-500k in 30 startups over the next 2-3 years, 8 are already done.
