"A new study of startups sharing a coworking space offers a new wrinkle in the debate over work-from-anywhere: Proximity matters, especially close proximity, to spread knowledge between disparate enterprises." The study is very comprehensive in it covers a unique space and was done over a few years. I'm guessing it was CIC. Coworking spaces help people to 'cross pollinate' ideas and learning. Coworking spaces excel at this because they employ humans to facilitate a community. They help people find their common ground and bring them together with events. If you need event inspiration head over to insta and check out the plethora of reels on them (just follow coworking brands you admire.) *also worst image ever for in person collaboration study https://lnkd.in/gdXxMvzR Rex Miller Steve King Nick Bloom #coworking #proximity #collaboration #hospitality #community Mara Hauser Sarah Travers Lisa Skye Brad Krauskopf Sam Raymond Lucia Diana Chris Davies

New (& very cool) MIT Sloan research by Christian Catalini, Maria Roche, and Alexander Oettl emphasizes the importance of physical proximity for knowledge spillovers among startups. Their study found that startups within 20 meters of each other in a coworking space have a higher chance of adopting similar technologies, highlighting the benefits of face-to-face interactions. This research is a great reminder of the value of early-stage interactions and how being close can lead to innovation and growth. As we navigate the in-office vs. remote work debate, this is a strong case for maintaining some level of in-person collaboration. Thanks for sharing, Kostas Stamatiadis! https://lnkd.in/emEsxdBW

🚀 Why Startups Choose Coworking Spaces? 🚀 In the fast-paced world of startups, finding the right environment to grow is crucial. Here are some reasons why coworking spaces are the perfect choice for startups: 💼 Flexibility for Growth: Startups often need to scale quickly or adapt to changing circumstances. Coworking spaces offer the flexibility to expand or reduce your workspace as needed—no long-term leases or unnecessary commitments. 🤝 Networking Opportunities: Coworking spaces bring together diverse professionals from different industries. For startups, this is an invaluable opportunity to connect with potential clients, partners, and investors, all under one roof. 💡 Cost Efficiency: Renting a traditional office space can be expensive, especially for startups with limited budgets. Coworking spaces provide access to modern facilities and high-quality services without the high overhead costs. 📊 Access to Resources: Most coworking spaces offer essential business amenities like high-speed internet, meeting rooms, and office equipment. This allows startups to focus on their core operations without worrying about logistical hassles. 🎯 Increased Productivity and Innovation: Being surrounded by like-minded professionals in a vibrant environment boosts creativity and productivity. The energy in coworking spaces often leads to fresh ideas and innovative solutions, perfect for startup growth. 🌍 Community and Support: Startups thrive in collaborative environments. Close proximity is the key to knowledge spillovers among startups As the in-office versus work-from-home debate continues, new MIT Sloan research makes the case for at least a little bit of face time. Distance might make the heart grow fonder, but when it comes to information sharing, physical proximity is more desirable. Recently published research from MIT Sloan finds that knowledge spillovers among startups in a coworking space are more likely to occur when those startups are within 20 meters of one another. Go beyond those 20 meters — about the width of an Olympic swimming pool — and the spillover “greatly reduces,” write MIT Sloan research scientist Christian Catalini and his co-authors, Maria P. Roche and Alexander Oettl. More specifically, the type of knowledge spillovers that “help in the selection of technologies from a large choice set and that lead to the integration of external knowledge” occur at very short distances, the authors state in their paper, “Proximate (Co-)Working: Knowledge Spillovers and Social Interactions.” While the study’s focus is on startups and their decisions, the research also contributes to the ongoing discussion on how best to design workspaces for knowledge sharing, according to Catalini. https://lnkd.in/dUYm2ATR By Meredith Somers

When it comes to sharing ideas, how much does close proximity matter? Short answer - Magic happens within 20 meters ! #Startups within 20 meters of each other influence each other the most in the choice and implementation of web technologies. According to a study, working within that short distance increases a company’s probability of adopting a neighbor’s technology by 3 percentage points. Beyond 20 meters, the influence of proximity declines quickly. The study found that doubling the distance between two firms reduced the probability of technology adoption by 1.7 percent. Coworking is not just a desk, it’s the foundation of startup success. When you’re starting a business, every choice matters. And where you work? That’s more than just a desk or a chair. A good workspace does more than give you a place to sit. It gives you the support, energy, and connections to grow. That’s what coworking spaces do for startups. Imagine this: ➡️You’re surrounded by people on a similar journey. Every desk around you is a hub of ideas, energy, and ambition. The person next to you might be solving the same challenges or could have insights to help you move forward. ➡️You have resources whenever you need them. Need a quiet room to talk to an investor? It’s there. Want a space to brainstorm with your team? You got it. Fast Wi-Fi, meeting rooms, even endless coffee, all the essentials are right there so you can stay focused on building your business. ➡️Collaboration happens naturally. In a coworking space, networking feels easy and natural. You might meet a future client, mentor, or even a co-founder over coffee or at a shared table. When you’re surrounded by other motivated people, opportunities to connect are always around the corner. ➡️The energy is contagious. There’s something inspiring about working in a space full of driven, passionate people. When you see others pushing forward, it motivates you to keep going too. For startups, coworking is more than just a place to work. It’s a community. It’s support. It’s a launchpad for ideas and connections.
