This Black History Month, we’re celebrating the changemakers transforming the futures of young people of Black African and Caribbean heritage. To kick things off, we’re spotlighting ACCESS UK, an organisation dedicated to addressing the critical issue of Black youth unemployment. Through its impactful initiatives, ACCESS UK is not only changing the narrative but amplifying the voices of countless young people across London, providing them with the opportunities and support needed to thrive. One of their flagship initiatives, the Operation Black Employment (OBE) programme, is tackling the urgent crisis of Black youth unemployment by helping young people access meaningful job opportunities. Although currently operating on a smaller scale, OBE has already made a significant impact, with plans to expand its reach and create even greater change across London. https://lnkd.in/eeHknUnB Another standout programme, ‘Road 2 CEO,’ equips young people who have been involved with the youth justice system with entrepreneurial skills to successfully re-enter society and launch their own businesses. We’re proud to spotlight ACCESS UK as the first organisation in our Black History Month series. Their incredible work is empowering young people to rewrite their own stories, break down barriers, and create lasting opportunities for success. Go through additional programs after certification. Graduate from undergrad and pay for a Masters to keep certification. All that for pay that you can barely live on. #weneedblackteachers

Meet AU Expert and American University School of Education professor Brian McGowan. His research centering experiences of Black college students and minoritized individuals is at the forefront of conversations about race and equity in higher education. “My work is deliberate—to see Black students as assets, to lift up their experiences, to lift up their humanity. To help stakeholders in higher education understand those experiences, but, more importantly, design policies [and] create climates on campus for Black students to succeed.” #AUChangeCantWait

Here are the numbers and the stories. Our fellowship investment in aspiring Black male educators is $27,230 per fellow + additional $35,000 in living stipend over two semesters. That’s a total value of $62,230 to support young men who want to become teachers without ever having to take on the responsibility of being the teacher of record while getting their credential. Since launching in 2021 we have had 70 applicants, accepted 20 into the fellowship, 4 now have their credentials and in classrooms as teachers, 5 in the last year of their program and will have their certifications by May 2025 and 6 new in the pipeline who are just getting started. This is the work. It’s not about them getting a “job” or living in affordable housing. It’s about the deep transformative work that happens over two years in relationship with us (the village) and them establishing their careers and pathways to living in their commnities where they teach. Question… Is there REALLY a Black middle class in the UK? Here’s a controversial thought: in Britain, “class” isn’t just about economics. It’s cultural, social, and often racial—shaped by heritage, identity, and lived experiences. Let me explain. We see prominent white millionaires like Alan Sugar and Paul McCartney who, despite massive financial success, still describe themselves as “working class.” Why? Because their identity isn’t simply a reflection of wealth; it’s a deep-rooted connection to the heritage and social culture of the working class. For them, class remains a matter of collective experience and values, irrespective of their bank balance. Meanwhile, successful Black Britons such as David Olusoga or Patricia Bright may identify as middle class based on their economic status, yet within British society, they aren’t always embraced as such. Despite economic mobility, they often find themselves navigating cultural and social dynamics where “middle class” circles remain largely white-dominated spaces that don’t fully recognize their identity or status. This contrast highlights a fundamental truth about class in the UK: for white Britons, class can be heritage and experience, extending beyond wealth. But for Black Britons, class mobility tends to be recognized almost solely through an economic lens—and even then, social acceptance is not guaranteed. Why does this matter? Because it shows that our conversation around class needs to go deeper than income brackets. We must acknowledge that class in the UK remains intertwined with race and cultural norms, often limiting the social and cultural acceptance of Black Britons in “middle class” spaces, even when they have achieved economic success. I had the privilege of leading a session titled "Education's Post-Pandemic Evolution: What We Provide Matters," and later joined Herman Bulls, vice chairman and international director at JLL, to discuss "Organizational Leadership, Governance, and Impact."
