“Access to home tests may help increase initial screening for syphilis, including in individuals who may be reluctant to see their health care provider about possible sexually transmitted infection exposure. This can lead to increased lab testing to confirm diagnosis, which can result in increased treatment and reduction in the spread of infection.” - Dr. Michelle Tarver, MD, PhD, acting director of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health 📰 The Hill, Eden Teshome https://lnkd.in/e4JEYNWJ

According to a new peer-reviewed scientific study, the likelihood of hospitalization is the same in seasonal #coronavirus and in #SARSCoV2 infections. Seasonal coronavirus infections even carried a higher risk for lower respiratory involvement than #COVID19. COVID-19 had a milder course than seasonal coronavirus infections in children. So should the healthcare change to diagnostic methods which address seasonal virus instead of COVID-19? Or at least implement in pediatric patients tests which cover both? Such as the #mariPOC by ArcDia International which is the only method truly suited for rapid testing of seasonal coronavirus at the point of sampling. https://lnkd.in/d7-xxt8B

Drug-resistant infections are a problem for everyone, but especially for newborns. They don’t have fully developed immune systems, and their bodies are less equipped to fight infections. The risk is highest for infants born sick or prematurely. Bloodborne infections – sepsis – are one major threat to newborns. Sepsis can move quickly, overpowering the body and causing severe illness and even death within hours. Doctors don’t have time to test babies to see what’s infecting them and have to treat them based on what Dr. Mike Sharland calls a best guess. These infections are often resistant to the drugs that are available to treat them, too. National and international guidelines can help doctors make difficult and life-altering decisions about treatment, but there’s not much guidance for health professionals treating newborns. That’s in part because there is so little research on which antibiotics work in newborns. Sharland, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at St. George's University of London, is helping lead a group running the clinical trials needed to form the basis of guidelines. In this episode, Dr. Sharland tells us about the terrifying growth of drug-resistant infections in newborns and the need for better antibiotics for vulnerable babies. To increase the amount of syphilis testing, labs need to remove moral judgment and acknowledge the STI as just another infection. Read here: https://buff.ly/3UqfMXy #syphilis #sti #stitesting #std #stdtesting #stigma #labtesting #pathologists

"When you think about delta screening, you really have to start with hepatitis B screening... only about 10% of people with HBV worldwide are aware of their status and you cannot screen for delta until you are diagnosed with hepatitis B," Dr. John Ward explains in new Healio Gastroenterology article. Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) has a significant impact, with up to 80% of patients progressing to liver cirrhosis and over 50% succumbing from liver disease within 10 years of diagnosis. Surveillance efforts are hindered by a lack of awareness and inconsistent and inaccurate infection rates. Dr. John Ward emphasizes that gaining "a better sense of how big the prevalence is" will drive necessary changes in policy, practice, and HDV care. Read the full story to gain insights from experts across the field, highlighting best practices and current screening guidelines for HDV, and to help raise awareness about this rare disease: https://buff.ly/3yNxeNu

What is Syphilis? Understanding the Disease, Its Stages, and Treatment Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It is a chronic disease that can progress through multiple stages if left untreated, affecting various organs and tissues in the body over time. While syphilis was once a leading cause of serious illness and death, modern antibiotics have made it treatable and preventable. However, syphilis cases have been rising in recent years, making awareness and early detection essential for preventing long-term complications. https://lnkd.in/e3WxkP8n

Newborn babies are extremely vulnerable to #infections, including #sepsis, which affects three million babies annually and causes over half a million deaths. Many of these deaths occur due to the unavailability of effective #antibiotics, a problem worsened by antimicrobial-resistant infections. Listen to this One World, One Health episode with Professor Mike Sharland, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at St. George's University of London, as he tells us about the terrifying growth of drug-resistant infections in #newborns and the need for better antibiotics for vulnerable babies. Tune in: https://ow.ly/fWgh50SI1al Learn more about the global targets to tackle antimicrobial resistance (#AMR), proposed in the 2024 Lancet series on AMR “10-20-30 by 2030”, and what should be considered ahead of the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on AMR here: https://lnkd.in/dyU7eASR
