The philanthropic sector increasingly recognizes that investing in women and girls is crucial for our world's progress. Our partners at Gender Funders CoLab highlight the challenges that private organizations face in uniting around initiatives that advance women’s rights. To address this, they brought together some of the largest private foundations, creating a community of funders to mobilize resources. Between 2014 and 2023, CoLab members moved an impressive $2.2 billion toward women’s rights and gender equality! A representative at Shake the Table comments that “women’s funds play critical roles in moving money to groups traditionally locked out of mainstream funding opportunities." Feminist Global Philanthropy is essential if we are to learn from the mistakes of the past, respond to the "anti-gender" movement and deliver sustainable change. 🤝 As CEO of a girls' rights charity during the UK government's sweeping aid cuts, I saw first-hand the cost of concentrating power far away from the hands of those who need it most. Years of progress were quickly dismantled and ultimately invisible people paid the price. Feminist Approaches move beyond realising basic rights or outcomes and enable us to alter the power structures that create injustice, starting with building more collaborative and equal partnerships between philanthropists and the movements and people they fund. Without this fundamental power shift we are doomed to repeat the mistakes of the last decades- of piecemeal progress that cannot withstand the powerful forces that stand against us. Working in the social impact sector over the past few years and interacting with funders and donors through MASH Project Foundation and AVPN has deepened my interest in understanding the nuances of philanthropy. Recently, on Shankar’s recommendation, I picked up the book Philanthropy Revolution by Lisa Z G., which truly broadened my perspective on women-led philanthropy. Women philanthropists have often had to navigate a complex landscape, from battling gender biases to underrepresentation in leadership roles. Yet, they continue to redefine what it means to give. The Women Give 2022 report by the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy reveals that women are more strategic in their philanthropy, focusing on social equity, education, and healthcare. But their impact goes beyond financial contributions—they are also powerful advocates for policy changes promoting social justice and gender equality. The nonprofit leadership gender gap is something that doesn't just hurt the women looking to get roles in leadership positions, but it actually has wider effects on the industry as a whole. These diversity and inclusion issues extend over to BIPOC and LGBTQ+ women too as the intersections between identities often have a negative correlation with holding leadership positions. This isn't a condemnation of nonprofits, but rather a welcome encouragement of embracing forward-thinking programs that hope to solve these systemic problems long-term. #Nonprofit #Leadership #Diversity #Justice
