Did you know that many Brachycephalic breeds (such as English Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Pugs, and Boston Terriers) struggle to regulate their temperature effectively due to poorly developed and overcrowded nasal passages? Unfortunately, as temperatures rise over summer, these dogs are at a higher risk of heatstroke. Dogs will continue to pant to try to lose heat, but this can eventually lead to airway swelling and difficulty breathing. These cases can present to vets as emergencies, and sometimes, patients need a temporary tracheotomy to help stabilise their breathing. We would urge Brachycephalic dog owners to contact their vet if they notice any increased breathing effort associated with warmer weather. When Life Throws You a Curveball... or a Mouse 🐭 This morning started like any other—I was getting ready to work out, curating the perfect playlist, when I saw a shadow move across the floor. Nope, not a trick of the light... it was a mouse! Suddenly, forget about unemployment or my daughter's upcoming surgery; that mouse immediately took top spot on my stress list! My workout transformed into a full-on cleaning session. We cleaned out the whole room, packed up all the stored food into bins—because, seriously, nothing gets into my emergency stash! To make it a little fun, my daughter and I teamed up and tried to lure the mouse outside like two wannabe animal whisperers. Spoiler: it didn't go as planned, but we sure had a good laugh about it! But seriously, why does something as small as a mouse cause such alarm and stress? 🚨 Did you know Burmese and Birman cats have the longest lifespans among common cat breeds? According to recent research published in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, these cats can live up to 14.4 years. Sphynx cats, however, have it rough with an average lifespan of just 6.7 years, often due to health issues tied to their genes. The study dug into data from nearly 8,000 UK cats from 2019 to 2021, aiming to give cat owners solid info to better manage their pets’ health. It introduced “life tables” which predict life expectancy at different ages, shedding light on how factors like gender and whether a cat is fixed affect their overall lifespan. Turns out, mixed-breed cats usually outlive purebreds by about 1.5 years. The research also pointed out that lifestyle choices, like whether cats are indoor or outdoor, play a big role in how long they might live, though these bits are trickier to track.
