‘What Makes a Great Charity’? 😊 🏆📢 Here is what Nicole Engelman of Cooper Investors Philanthropy had to say; Facta non verba – acts not words – it is through adhering to this ethos that we think a great charity is made. Great charities have that something extra. Big or small, they are established by inspiring founders and helmed by leaders with drive, passion, and purpose who are on the ground, imbedded into the community, delivering real outcomes to vulnerable people experiencing disadvantage. With empathy and compassion, a great charity listens to the voices of those it serves, understanding their needs, preferences, and aspirations. This empathy informs the design and delivery of programs that truly make a difference in people's lives. Whether through capacity-building initiatives, advocacy efforts, or long-term investments, great charities seek to create lasting change that empowers individuals and communities to thrive independently. An eye to sustainability ensures that great charities have an impact that endures beyond the immediate interventions. Ultimately, a great charity is more than the sum of its parts – it is a shining light on the hill that drives positive change and inspires other to join in the pursuit of a better world. Let's appreciate the value of monthly giving/sustaining donors for nonprofits. These committed donors provide steady support, higher retention rates, and increased giving through multiple channels. Thanking and engaging them should be a priority to nurture their ongoing commitment. #MonthlyGiving #DonorRetention #NonprofitSupport

At Northamptonshire Community Foundation we're developing our strategic philanthropy to ensure our grant making on behalf of donors is not just about crisis and immediate response to community needs but funding of preventative projects. The earlier people get the crucial help and support they need, the more likely we are to help avert more serious issues later on in their life journey. The challenge for funders is of course if you fund preventative work, how can you prove the impact of what never happened? The answer to me is simple: by reporting the stories of change where people can inform charities and groups about what has gone well in their lives. Not every impact measurement has to be a number or data quantification. #prevention #grantmaking #upstreaming

📢 Supporting Thriving Communities Charities Institute Ireland welcomes the commitments in the draft Programme for Government aimed at strengthening communities across Ireland. The proposed measures outline clear steps and enhanced indicators to ensure sustainable support structures over the next five years. We are particularly encouraged by plans to update the tax code to better incentivise charitable giving and the commitment to progress Ireland’s first National Philanthropy Policy. These steps will be instrumental in fostering a stronger culture of philanthropy, enabling charities to drive meaningful and lasting change in society. By championing philanthropy and strategic giving, Ireland can unlock new opportunities to tackle pressing social challenges and build a more resilient future for all. #CharitiesInstituteIreland #Philanthropy #ThrivingCommunities #SocialImpact

👏 I welcome the fact that the Association of Charitable Foundations does such hard work to inform the public about the world of grantmaking foundations. 👏 The work they do is a powerful tool to address the imbalance between funders and grantees. The need for support in 2022-23 increased more than ever and saw the term 'polycrisis' become a commonly used description for the interconnected and overlapping crises affecting climate, global health, economies and social systems'. 🤔 This report shows how grantmaking foundations did an immense amount of self-reflection, and adopted a more strategic approach, for what they could do to address this - and it provides a number of examples about who did what. The overall public view of funders (and philanthropists in general) is often that they are in their own little bubble, and do what they assume needs to be done, rather than what actually does need to be done. 🤞 But I hope this report is seen as a demonstration that is old-school thinking. Things have changed. Those with excess capital have begun to reach out to those with lived experiences, getting more informed, and becoming more transparent about their activities. In every day life, criticism that is badly delivered often backfires. I put forward the same could be true for foundations. A critique of their work is not a bad thing... but they should be welcomed, educated and encouraged - that is the only way we will be able to find more synergies between all of the stakeholders in this sector 👍. 🙏 Many thanks to Carol Mack and her team for all of their hard work to make this happen. #grantmaking #foundations #donors #grants #philanthropy

Recent analysis in Third Sector explores the current funding landscape for UK charities and its impact on grant-makers, featuring insights from ACF chief executive Carol Mack and director of policy, practice and research Catherine Seymour, and the experiences of some ACF member foundations. As highlighted in Emily Harle's article, while other funding sources have declined, grants from foundations remain one of the few stable sources of support for charities. This has led to some notable trends among grant-makers: 📈 Application volumes have increased significantly for many funders ⚖️ Many grant teams are adapting their processes to manage higher demand ⏸️ Some funders are pausing new grant-making to review and adjust their programmes to better serve the charities, organisations and individuals they support. Carol and Catherine discuss how ACF members are responding to these challenges and the importance of collaboration between funders when considering programme changes, to understand the impact on the wider ecosystem. There are two key ways DAFs benefit individuals. The first is through tax advantages, but studies show the second benefit is actually the primary driver of giving, and that is donor values and beliefs. Remember to talk to your clients about how they can utilize DAFs as part of their wealth management strategy to achieve meaningful impact for causes that are important to them
Donor-advised funds (DAFs) are effective and efficient vehicles for grantmaking. Recently, one donor recommended a $2,500 grant to provide the community with non-perishable food, clothing and blankets. We're here to help our donors help others. #Philanthropy #Grantmaking #Nonprofits
