The Emergence of Nature Hotel Resorts Nature hotel resorts have emerged as a response to a growing desire among travelers for more meaningful and sustainable experiences. These destinations, nestled amidst breathtaking landscapes, prioritise environmental preservation and often integrate seamlessly with their surroundings. From forest retreats and beachfront eco-resorts to treehouse accommodations and wilderness lodges, these establishments cater to travelers seeking tranquility and a deeper connection with nature. Key Attractions and Experiences The allure of nature hotel resorts lies in their ability to offer a diverse range of experiences that go beyond traditional vacations. Guests can immerse themselves in guided nature walks, wildlife safaris, or stargazing sessions. Moreover, many resorts curate eco-conscious activities such as tree planting, conservation workshops, and sustainable farming experiences, fostering a sense of environmental stewardship among visitors. Challenges Faced by Nature Hotel Resorts Environmental Sustainability Maintaining a delicate balance between catering to guests’ needs and preserving the natural environment poses a significant challenge for these resorts. Striking a harmony between luxury amenities and eco-friendly practices—such as reducing carbon footprints, minimising plastic usage, and implementing renewable energy sources—requires consistent effort and investment. Infrastructure and Accessibility Often situated in remote or ecologically sensitive areas, these resorts face logistical challenges in terms of accessibility and infrastructure development. Balancing the need for necessary facilities with preserving the pristine landscapes can be a complex task, especially when considering water, waste management, and energy requirements. Community Engagement and Socio-Economic Impact For many nature hotel resorts located in local communities, fostering positive relationships and contributing to the socio-economic development of the region is crucial. Balancing the influx of tourism with the well-being of local communities, respecting indigenous cultures, and providing employment opportunities while minimizing disruption to traditional ways of life is a delicate balance. Resolving Challenges and Moving Forward The NRDA has been established to help address these challenges that nature hotel and resorts face, by adopting innovative strategies. Embracing sustainable architecture, implementing eco-friendly practices, collaborating with local communities, and engaging in conservation efforts are some key steps. Additionally, technology plays a role by enabling smart resource management and efficient operations. There’s are two unifying concepts in tomorrow’s hospitality industry: responsibility, and detoxification. Responsibility towards the planet, the local culture, and each other along with a responsible use of new technologies like AI in communications and booking processes. Detoxification from traditional ways of entertaining guests and designing hotels. Both concepts entail #Intention in the creative process; in other words, creating hotels that solve problems in society, rather than stand as passive witnesses to social and cultural change. Hot on the heels of last weeks panel discussion around Wellness and Sensory guest journey at the inaugural AHICE SEA in Singapore here is a great article that highlights some hotels that are approaching this topic with their own unique individual interpretations - this is exactly what we spoke about during our session. It is encouraging to see more hotels really getting behind the Biophilic design principles and finding ways to incorporate them across the properties to improve guest experiences and hotel performance. Study conduct by Bill Browning from Terrapin Bright Green showed that hotels where Biophilic design principles were applied saw a 36% use rate in comparison to 25% for conventionally designed lobby spaces. - that is a 11% increase in dwell rates - translated that is 11% more opportunity for revenue generation in well activated lobby spaces with good F&B. #biophilicdesign #hoteldesign #sensoryexperience #hospitalitydesign #hospitalityinteriors #hoteldevelopment #sustainablearchitecture
