Structural variants (SVs) are known drivers of cancer, however they are difficult to resolve due to their long and complex structure. In this case study, learn how researchers used nanopore sequencing to analyse structural variants in human paired colorectal cancer samples. Using long nanopore reads they revealed previously hidden genomic information suggesting that this method has the potential to detect novel fusions genes. Praise God for Fragmentomics! Too many of us have lost someone we love to cancer. Fragmentomics is helping detect cancer in stage 1 where survival rate is dramatically increased and studies show 5 years of life are added to someone we love. I was privileged to come into the healthcare software industry 18 years ago when many of the technologies and portals and interfaces had not yet been created. I am thankful for all the times God allowed me to be part of a beta team to expedite critical interfaces like Lab Portal Services and eprescribing to actual implementation. I pray that this week will be the week that all my friends who have been waiting to land and get back to doing their part to advancing critical studies like Fragmentomics so that together we can continue to bring greater is the week that we all get back to contributing! It is time that equity groups came up with new ideas for generating 25 to 50 million dollars to reinvest in bringing greater. There is nothing greater about stopping those who are invested in what we are all in this industry to do from being able to do their part to accomplish. Time is critical for our family members for whom we are all in this to bring greater and to help provide extra years to enjoy life together. Great companies could do a 20% RIF without the purchase of an equity company if the goal to bring better was to take several hundred of your top employees away from doing just that. I looked up what leadership at equity firms make. It is far more than what most of the top talent you release every time you have a RIF make. Yet, it is their great ideas in which you reinvest and take credit for it. How about doing a RIF of 10% of your employees after a purchase? You would easily generate just as much cash and have to cause fewer people to be out of work. It would flood the market a whole lot less. You could even take the 10% of top talent with actual ideas whom you would have otherwise released and put them in those positions at lower salaries. That is the goal anyway and you get to save money and truly generate great ideas for the next purchase. I give you my permission to use my great idea for bringing greater. Please dare to be different. Bring new ideas with you with the next purchase of a great company. Praise God for Fragmentomics! Everyone of my friends will land in a better place and will be part of greater life saving studies like Fragmentomics. To all the great companies out there! There is nothing wrong with selling to an equity group. Please just be sure to maintain control of decision making. If you make comments to your family that suggest there will be no changes to employment, stand behind it! You cannot put a price tag on trust! You worked too hard to earn it! Once you lose it, good luck getting it back!

The next UT Center for Computational Oncology #PaperOfTheWeek investigate cancer induced cachexia. Authors Suzan Farhang-Sardroodi, Michael A La Croix, and Kathleen Wilkie (Toronto Metropolitan Mathematics Alumni Group) offer a mathematical model of the effect of chemotherapy on muscle, lean mass, and the tumor. A huge advantage to ultra long reads over short read technology! There is a big gap between the indels that can be resolved with Illumina massively parallel short read sequencing and larger CNVs that can be resolved by microarray. Nanopore's tech is a game changer for these understudied structural variants. There is another fascinating article by Ming Lei et. al. where a case of chromothrypsis in a complex genetic disorder was resolved with long nanopore reads.
