Until recently, we thought that cell-free DNA (cfDNA) originated from the tumor or the surrounding tissue in cancer patients, but a paper published in Cancer Discovery find this is not the case. Researchers examined cfDNA methylation in 178 cancer patients and 64 cancer-free patients and discovered that roughly 76% of cfDNA actually comes from leukocytes, with neutrophils as the main contributor. This surprising data causes us to rethink our previous assumptions. This information suggests that “cancers may have a systemic effect on cell turnover or DNA clearance”, opening new doors for understanding the wider impact cancer has on the body’s processes. A new way to fight cancer is emerging that targets the 🧬DNA damage response of cancer cells. 🔈Research news 🔬 New research reveals a key vulnerability in LKB1-deficient non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), which is one of the deadliest forms of cancer and affects about 30% of cases all patients suffering from NSCLC. With contributions from professor Jiri Bartek, head of the Genome Integrity Group at the Danish Cancer Institute, a team of international scientists used zebrafish and human lung organoid models to screen for compounds that target these tumours. They identified two kinase inhibitors, Piceatannol and Tyrphostin 23, that show promise for more effective treatments. #cancer #cancerresearch #science #lungcancer
