No-one wants to hear the biggest difference between marketing in a startup versus a big brand. First off, you'll need to be much hungrier, much more humble, and much more motivated. But the biggest difference is that you'll have to be PATIENT. Patience sucks. We hate patience. We want results. We want them NOW. We don't want to wait. But when we're starting a new business, we need to give it space to grow. Yes, there are some instant viral successes, but they're super-rare. Plus, most of them happen to a tiny company that is not at all prepared for the avalanche of attention ... The usual result: negative experiences for potential customers or users. New companies take time to evolve and grow. New products and apps take time to get great. New marketing needs time to develop and blossom. We need to give them that space. And, we need to give ourselves that grace. We chatted with Itay Milstein, VP of marketing at Mad Brain Games. Often I go to a company's site and have no idea what they do. If that's the case, you've gone too far in the "I am a visionary" direction and need to come back down to Earth. The key is to do both: dream big while also being humble and direct. I'll be vulnerable and use my own site as an example. The first line is "Be more than a commodity." The second is "Marketing strategy, content, and PR for adtech companies." The first line is bigger and bolder. It touches on something I argue all the time: the main marketing challenge for adtech companies is differentiation. They're largely all the same to buyers; marketing can fix that. The second line is very direct and simple: this is literally what we do and what you're going to tell finance you're paying us for. You absolutely need to state what you do for customers. There should be no doubt. But that doesn't mean you can't go a little bigger, too.

If you're looking for marketing inspiration, marketing probably isn't your best source. The echo chamber has a powerful effect with epic amounts of FOMO thrown in for good measure. Not leveraging AI? Loser. Not all-in on account-based everything? Bro, do you even market? And how's that dark social strategy coming on? But while knowing what's going on in our bubbles is useful, it's not what will make us more distinctive or necessarily more effective. Quick story... We've spent an inordinate amount of time creating our B2B Effectiveness Engine this year. It's changed how we can help clients and, yes, sets us apart (I think) from other agencies. It's my third attempt at doing this. It actually started a few years back when I read Michael Lewis's book, Moneyball about the unlikely success of the Oakland A's baseball team. While I have zero interest in baseball, the core concept of there being some key differentiators that predict success that others are ignoring was super-compelling. So I tried to apply this to B2B marketing. But, while things like excess share of voice (ESOV) and category entrance points are interesting and useful, I couldn't bring them together into something cohesive that we could base the business around. Which led us to research what actually does separate top performers from also-rans. And, like in Moneyball, often it's not what you expect. Thing is, if I'd stayed in my bubble, we'd never have got here.

All growth across all industries is marketing-led. Period. Content, paid ads, social media - it's not just fluff. It's the engine that drives leads, builds your brand, and fuels your bottom line. Sure, you can hustle your way to a million in revenue. But to break through that ceiling further, you need a well-oiled marketing machine. What do you do when there is no clear persona for what you're building? 🤔 This is a question that I find myself asking now that I'm doing a deeper dive into how and when my product can be used. Yes, I started kind of backwards. I should have probably done this research ahead of time, but I trusted that because there is established competition I'd just get started and "figure it out." It's not necessarily a bad approach, but it's not the easiest way to go. Which lands me in this situation: There is a clear JOB TO BE DONE. But there is no clear PERSONA. So from a marketing standpoint, how do you reach the people with that job to be done, at the right time, without spending a boatload of cash on marketing? (I'm bootstrapping). Open to suggestions! If your product delivers real benefits and blows your customers away, they'll do the marketing for you. So focus on building a product that people love and can't help but share. Let your happiest customers become your most effective marketers.

I’ve worked in marketing for 5 years.
