Demand for Djirra’s life saving frontline services grew by 33% last year, compared with the previous year. We welcome the Federal Government’s support for indexation and pay parity for Djirra and other specialist Family Violence Prevention and Legal Services (FVPLSs). This has been made possible because of the advocacy of Djirra, and many others, informing the new National Access to Justice Partnership (NAJP). BUT NOW WE NEED ACTION. Djirra CEO Antoinette Braybrook AM explains, “We need significantly more funding to meet unmet legal need so that all Aboriginal women, no matter where they live, can access high quality, culturally safe, specialist legal services for their safety and that of their children.” ABORIGINAL WOMEN AND THEIR CHILDREN DESERVE BETTER. As we move closer towards finalising NAJP, Djirra calls for: - FUNDING CERTAINTY and CLARITY for our life saving, frontline services - A STRONG FOCUS on Aboriginal women and children’s safety - REAL ACTION and ACCOUNTABILITY on meeting Closing the Gap targets Read more at https://lnkd.in/gAcB8baZ Mark Dreyfus #NAJP #NLAP #AboriginalWomensLivesMatter #SaveFVPLS

An organization in which people fully support their mission.
Mind the gap! 👀 In all seriousness, we often feel that our work differs from what people think we do. While we work within Muslim communities and political advocacy is powerful and necessary, our goal is to engage and mobilize people beyond Muslim communities. By addressing anti-Muslim bias, discrimination, and violence in communities of faith, we aim to create structures of community solidarity and mobilize leaders to carry out effective, meaningful change. Our goal is to help more people beyond Muslim communities to see anti-Muslim discrimination as their issue, too. Have any questions? Drop them below! ⬇️ #ShoulderToShoulder #S2SCampaign #StopMuslimHate #Interfaith #Community #Coalition #StrengthInNumbers #S2S

If you do one thing today, please read this article. Youth Crime is NOT out of control. Youth Crime in Queensland has seen an increase but there are a number of factors that contribute to these stats, only one of them would be an increase in crimes being committed by young people. Youth Crime is still down 30% since 2001. This rhetoric is dangerous for young people, especially our blak children who face increasing racial disparities across all facets of the criminal legal system. Further, these rhetorics justify vigilante behaviours towards mob as evidenced in this article. Our kids are already at increased risk and entrenched in harmful state systems, we don't need to create more discussions that justify and encourage these responses. We have a duty as mob to ensure we are speaking truthfully from our lived or professional experiences but that we are making statements that truthful and accurate and that don't perpetuate harmful narratives and stereotypes. The children and young people engaging in criminal activity need help, support, connection and healing. They are not bad kids, they are hurt kids. Hurt kids ask for love in the most unloving ways. The evidence on the harms of locking people up (especially children ) is well documented yet the govt and some of the wider community continue to support it and wonder why nothing changes. The hyper incarceration of mob is no accident and not individual failures of mob. Our kids don't come from broken homes, society is broken. Not our kids, not our families. Systemic racism, trauma and disadvantage are key drivers for criminal legal sysyem involvement. All created through colonisation, patriarchy and capitalism - the same reasons that keep mob entrenched in harmful colonial systems. STOP LOCKING OUR CHILDREN UP and ADDRESS THE ROOT/SYSTEMIC CAUSES OF CRIME.
Redefining youth justice in Queensland: A call for action to address the systemic issues leading to the overrepresentation of Indigenous children in detention. Today marks the anniversary of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody, which presented its final report on 15 April 1991. Initiated in 1987 by the Australian Government, this commission emerged in response to growing concerns regarding the frequent and often unexplained deaths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals while in state and territory detention. The comprehensive final report, comprising 339 recommendations, emerged as a testament to the resilience and determination of Indigenous communities to address systemic issues. These recommendations centered on fostering self-determination, curbing over-policing in First Nations communities, and diminishing the disproportionate incarceration rates of Indigenous peoples. Acknowledging the overrepresentation of Australia’s First Nations peoples in incarceration is a crucial step, although more actions beyond mere recommendations are needed for true justice to prevail. As we reflect on this anniversary, let it serve as a beacon of strength and resilience, guiding us to persist in our fight for justice, accountability, and tangible reform. Together, let us continue striving for a future where such tragedies become relics of the past. #Thirrili #stopblackdeathsincustody

#A 12 years old #Lamrot #Raped and #Killed #Justice for Lamrot In Ethiopia, the need for a coordinated, robust platform to combat violence against children (VAC) and violence against women (VAW) is urgent. The silence of key sectors, especially the legal system, highlights a troubling lack of accountability and enforcement of laws that should protect vulnerable groups. This silence not only reflects a deep-rooted failure to prioritize human rights but also suggests a broader issue of weak governance and a lack of rule of law. The lack of intervention by legal sectors raises serious concerns. Without decisive legal action, perpetrators operate with impunity, leaving survivors without justice or protection. This failure by institutions to respond to such horrific incidents reflects a systemic problem in which laws either aren't effectively enforced or are disregarded. It also sends a dangerous message that these acts of violence are not seen as critical issues. For Ethiopia to truly address VAC and VAW, it requires strong leadership, legal accountability, and a coordinated effort across all sectors, including government, civil society, and international organizations. The global community must recognize that this is not just a local issue but a human rights crisis that requires urgent attention and collective action. #Justice

In March 2023, the Victorian Government committed to vital bail reforms that would have reduced the over-incarceration of Aboriginal children. BUT.... Fast forward one year and today, the State Government has not only backflipped on these commitments but has announced new measures that will make things WORSE for our children. Today, the Victorian Government announced a trial of ankle bracelets for children. A trial that will disproportionately impact Aboriginal children. A trial that WILL see children subject to surveillance without ever being found guilty. A trial that WILL contribute to the continued over-policing and over-incarceration of Aboriginal children. Djirra will never welcome the incarceration or removal of Aboriginal children from their families. Our kids deserve to be safe with their mums. Our kids deserve to grow up in supportive environments connected to culture and country. This is the only way our families can thrive. Today, we call on the Victorian government to IMMEDIATELY scrap this trial, fulfil its previous commitments and invest urgently in specialist Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations like Djirra that prioritise Aboriginal self-determination, safety and culture. #AboriginalChildrenMatter #AboriginalWomensLivesMatter #WeHaveTheSolutions #CloseTheGap #SelfDetermination
