Weekly Insights No. 5. What should the European military industry prepare for if #Europe can count on less support from NATO? We can be sure of a few basics: - European countries must increase their defense spendings both individually and collectively; - if Europe's economic interests also matter in addition to our defense aspects, then European manufacturers can count on more orders; - then the European giants such as Leonardo, Airbus Defence and Space, Thales, Rheinmetall, Saab, Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, Dassault Systèmes, Safran and all the others can count on a very serious order book from Europe in the coming years; - because Europe must decide that if the #USA withdraws from Europe, it is worh feeding the US military industry with further orders. One can say if there is no protection, there is no protection money either; - especially, because we will then strengthen European supply chains and European protection through orders given to European OEMs. I consider this to be one of the most important questions. Will Europe, the European governments, the European Commission and European Defence Fund be able to achieve that these billions of euros will be usefully spent not only from a security but also from an economic point of view? What awaits us is not only a burden and a challenge, but an opportunity to give a general boost to smaller European companies, #SMEs and European #defense supply chains that was not possible before. With the newly elected US administration set to shake up defense spending, European defence tech must stay resilient and, most importantly, independent. Nordic Air Defence CEO, Karl Rosander, went on record with Forbes to discuss the need for changing priorities in defence tech spending and innovation. “With Trump, the only thing predictable is his unpredictability. As the Rapporteur for the #NATO Industrial Advisory Group (NIAG) Study Group SG-293, I had the honor of participating in the second phase kick-off meeting, which our company, CAFA Tech, organized at Tehnopol in Tallinn. Our work in SG-293 focuses on investigating the potential of Advanced and Novel Electronic Attack capabilities for Naval and Air Force Operations. Electronic warfare is a critical component to the success of air, sea, and land operations, and it’s a privilege to collaborate with leading companies from Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Turkey, the UK, Canada, and the USA. I’m proud to represent Estonia and CAFA Tech in this important initiative. 🇱🇹 🇪🇺 European Commissioner for Defence & Space Andrius Kubilius spoke today at the European Defence Agency annual conference. "The shortfalls in military materiel, if we compare with the Russian war economy, are colossal. We can no longer afford a fragmented and incremental approach. We need a real, big bang approach to increase defence production and acquisition. We also need a European approach." Kubilius said that it was vital that #EUdefence moves to a continental scale, with legislation enabling swift action and funding. Joint investments and aggregated demand will streamline production and reduce costs, ensuring capabilities are delivered on time, he said.
