From Theory to Praxis: Cultivating Inclusive Communities in Schools 🏫
High school was an interesting time for many of us. We were almost adults, and we felt invincible!
As a former middle school educator, I witnessed the remarkable growth and transformation of my students as they navigated this pivotal stage of life. Middle school is one heck of a time, but high school is where identities start to crystallize, and responsibilities grow.
In my journey, I can’t forget one teacher in particular, Mrs. Ward, my 10th-grade ELA teacher. She made me fall in love with reading and writing again. Her classroom felt like a community, safe and inclusive, where we laughed, cried, and engaged in challenging academic discourse with respect and curiosity.
🤔 How did this happen? Mrs. Ward allowed us the space to think, to imagine, to challenge, and to pause. She related to us in ways other teachers didn’t. She was frank, yet she held us to high expectations.
🎯 Reflecting on those years, I am reminded of how crucial it is for school leaders to embrace schools as places of community, justice, love, safety, and bold imagination. We can create environments where our students—and staff—can thrive, but it takes a collective effort.
📌 My ask: What will you do as a teacher or administrator to make your school or classroom a place where all students and staff members can thrive and be their best selves? Share your thoughts below!
