COMET OVER PORTUGAL The comet that exploded spectacularly over Spain and Portugal on 5/18/24 was not detected before the encounter. Probably a long-period asteroid, it is a reminder that Earth is constantly bombarded by hazardous objects from space, such as the Chelyabinsk meteor in 2013 (https://lnkd.in/enZPmbDS) that exploded with a blast equivalent to 400-500 kilotons of TNT, injuring almost 1500 people. PLANETARY DEFENSE What shall we do about mitigating the damage from an asteroid colliding with the Earth? The issues are presented in lecture slides from the 2016 course, Space System Design: https://lnkd.in/eTeQSm-E

The Cold War, which pitted the two most powerful nations following World War II—the United States and the Soviet Union—grew into the Space Race. The two superpowers engaged in a global war for domination for fifty years, spanning from consumer goods to military might. An important and novel venue for the Cold War competition was space. Both sides attempted to prove their dominance in front of a vigilant public by accomplishing spectacular rocketry and spaceflight exploits. Beyond these significant achievements, spaceflight technologies had additional uses. Missiles may be launched by rockets, and enemies could be observed via satellites. An overwhelming sense of pride brought the nation together after the moon landing. The struggle more important than any war on Earth had been won by the United States in the Space Race. Although there was no decrease in Cold War tensions, American citizens felt more like they belonged to the "superior" country. There are two problems that need to be addressed in space tech, the first is cleaning the space debris and the second is becoming more advanced in asteroid defense.

Design and Construction Leadership for the Aerospace, Defense, Advanced Technology, and Industrial markets.
While you may occasionally see me in a pair of NASA socks, I try to avoid getting too caught up in space-related merchandise. However, when I noticed that IFL Watches AB was making another space-themed watch, individually hand-painted and in very limited numbers, I just had to have one! #space #astronaut #defense #spaceeconomy #advancedtechnology

Five Nations https://lnkd.in/dH-5q_A8 In the distant future, when humans began to explore space, they encountered four other races. Neutrality was established between them, but conflicts over inhabited planets and resources were commonplace in the vastness of space. In Five Nations you will command a starfleet of earthlings. Your task is to build a base orbiting one of the planets that will become the center of your fleet and help expand its influence. In the process of building your base you'll need to extract various resources, develop and upgrade your fleet. Eventually you will have to engage in combat against other races, and here you must effectively use your ships to take over their bases and planets.

China is set to test its planetary defense capabilities with a mission to deflect the asteroid 2015 XF261 by 2030. The mission will include an observer spacecraft to study the asteroid and a projectile to impact it. This initiative, following NASA’s DART mission, underscores the global effort to protect Earth from potential asteroid threats and showcases international cooperation in space defense. #ChinaSpaceMission #AsteroidDeflection #PlanetaryDefense #SpaceExploration

This International Asteroid Day, let's ponder: Who's responsible for protecting Earth from cosmic threats? Unlike the dinosaurs, we have a choice. With space programs and advanced technology, we can detect and potentially deflect dangerous asteroids. Should this be a priority for governments, private sector, or a global collaborative effort? What role can you play in supporting asteroid awareness and planetary defense? 👇Tell us in the comments below and win an exciting prize! #AsteroidDay #PlanetaryDefense #SpaceExploration

GEMINI 5 1965: Through 29 August, Astronauts L. Gordon Cooper, Jr. (USAF Command Pilot and Mercury veteran, was the first person to fly two Earth orbital missions, right), and Charles Conrad, Jr. (USN) set eight records in the Gemini V mission: (1) longest flight--190 hours 55 minutes; (2) national man-hours in space--641 hours and 24 minutes; (3) longest multimanned flight--190 hours 55 minutes; (4) most orbits for manned flight--120; (5) most manned flights--9; (6) first man with a second flight--Cooper; (7) most flight time--Cooper; and (8) longest space flight--Cooper and Conrad. The capsule splashed down 600 miles east of Jacksonville after a 3,309,506-mile flight.

MISSION SUCCESS! United Launch Alliance (ULA)'s Vulcan Centaur successfully performed its #Cert1 flight test yesterday and, right out of the gate, this new rocket chased perfection. For those who missed it, here is the video of yesterday's inaugural launch: https://lnkd.in/e-8t9ZCx The team here at Concepts NREC is proud of our partnership with ULA and the key engineering design & development efforts that got us here as well as the ongoing role that we will continue to play with this strategic #launch vehicle. Now that the #VulcanRocket has gotten off the ground once, it’s time to repeat the feat again…and again. Vulcan has a hefty backlog of customers waiting for their rides to space, including 38 planned launches to deploy Amazon’s #Kuiper constellation. Also, there is one more certification flight required before the company can finally start competing with SpaceX to launch lucrative #military missions. Onward and upward! 🚀

On Khaleej Mag, I recently wrote about the trend of space militarization and space wars in the light of recent events. "The Pentagon’s latest actions underscore this trend. With powers like China and Russia making tremendous advances in space-based operations, the United States is responding by creating extensive capabilities for potential space warfare. This entails deploying a new generation of ground and space-based technologies to protect American satellites and, if necessary, destroy enemy spacecraft" Global dialogue and space preservation are the way forward. "This vision of space as holy and free of violence highlights the urgent need for global dialogue and solid efforts to prevent space militarization." #SpaceSustainability #SpaceDiplomacy #SpaceWarfare
