A report from last year sheds light the concerning discrepancies we are seeing in substance use trends. According to the American Medical Association’s Overdose Epidemic Report 2023, opioid prescriptions have decreased for the 13th consecutive year, while overdose and death related to illicitly manufactured fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine have increased. This disconnect between medically legal administration of opioids and illegal acquisition of the these substances highlights the critical need for continual education around substance misuse - especially for younger generations. #workplacewellness #substanceuse #substanceabusedisorder #elearning #employeeeducation #employees #hr #BrainHealth #Opioids

Naltrexone was approved by the FDA in 1994 to treat alcohol use disorder (AUD). It helps reduce the rewarding effects of alcohol and is available in oral and injectable forms. Despite its effectiveness, it's underutilized. Heavy alcohol use has increased since the pandemic, leading to more deaths. Healthcare providers can help by screening for AUD and offering medications like naltrexone to support recovery. Naltrexone, combined with counseling, can reduce heavy drinking and support long-term recovery. Please refer your patients for medication-assisted therapy for alcohol overuse WITH their psychotherapy or drug and alcohol counseling. I recently had a discussion with a few of leaders in EMS about #Ketamine and #Fentanyl and another potential way the opioid crisis may impact our communities. Their concern came from an emergency medicine standpoint and the belief that in some cases, paramedics may be overly cautious when it comes to using these drugs, which can be critical for treating patients in extreme pain. In some cases, that cautiousness may result in patients being under-medicated and not receiving the care they genuinely need. For those of you who work in the emergency medicine world … what are your thoughts? Are you seeing this within your agencies and if so, how do you handle? #EMS #paramedic #emergencymedicine

🔍 Unlocking Perspectives: How Drug Control Policies Shape Societal Dynamics 🔍 Let's talk about the under-discussed aspect of drug control policies: their potential role in perpetuating cycles of repression. 💡 🚫 Instead of solely focusing on addressing root causes and providing support, many drug control policies lean towards punitive measures, further stigmatizing individuals struggling with substance use. This approach, reminiscent of historical repression tactics, often exacerbates social inequalities and undermines efforts towards true healing and rehabilitation. 🌱 Imagine a paradigm shift where drug policies prioritize compassion, harm reduction, and addressing the underlying factors driving substance use. By reframing addiction as a health issue rather than a criminal one, we open doors to holistic solutions and genuine societal progress. 💬 Let's engage in constructive dialogue and challenge the status quo. Together, we can reimagine drug control policies that prioritize empathy, human dignity, and collective well-being. #ReframeRepression #EmbraceEmpathy #BreakTheCycle Join the conversation.
