Walking SA attended the Conservation SA 'Civil Society Lunch with the Premier'- a lunchtime discussion with the Premier of South Australia, Peter Malinauskas, about the needs of civil society to provide for healthy democracies. As a member of the conservation council, Walking SA were invited to participate in the discussion. Key takeaways are: * The need to strengthen civil society to find common ground and not enable divisive interests to prosper at the expense of the common good. * The role of nature, heritage and culture as fertile ground to bring people together and to ensure a sustainable and equitable future. * The need to reprioritise government spending to invest in the very things otherwise taken for granted - think re-distribution of wealth, preservation of natural resources and wild places, and environmental and cultural stewardship. Throughout my career working with Indigenous People in consevation, I’ve often witnessed a recurring issue: Indigenous communities are sometimes the last to be consulted in decision-making processes. Rather than being fully engaged from the start, they are too often presented with plans that have already been developed. Great news for Bay Area communities! The San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC) announced that the Regional Shoreline Adaptation Plan (RSAP) has been adopted! 🎉 The RSAP will guide the creation of coordinated, locally-planned sea level rise adaptation actions that work together to meet regional goals. After two years of stakeholder engagement, community workshops, and public comments, BCDC adopted the RSAP as required by SB 272. Coastal Quest is thrilled for this pivotal milestone in BCDC’s history that will help pave the way for how cities and practitioners can coordinate efforts and take action for a more resilient shoreline. Now’s the time for communities across the Bay to make progress. Local jurisdictions within BCDC's shoreline will have until January 2034 to complete Subregional Plans according to the Guidelines in the RSAP. The Clean River Advisory Council created an 8-part vision for the future of the Mississippi River. The final priority outlined in the document regards funding for green initiatives and nature-based solutions. We envision a policy enviornment where available federal funding is leveraged by local governments to promote river equity and green practices. In partnership with the Walton Family Foundation and the Quad Cities Community Foundation, the C-RAC is able to directly contribute to a well-funded conservation enviornment through our grants subcommittee.
