"Councils don’t need a handout this Budget, they need a hand-up and a reset in the way Government treats local communities." LGNZ President Mayor Sam Broughton has written a piece on what local government wants to see in tomorrow's budget. It's no secret that the current system is not sustainable for local communities, and that local and central government need to work better together on key matters like infrastructure. "If you want to find a time when the government and councils worked better together on infrastructure," says Sam, "you’ll need to go back to pre-1980s. Now we are the most over-centralised country in the OECD." As we've long been saying, simply increases rates is not a viable long-term solution to the many challenges our communities are facing. Sam's piece points out some better, more sustainable ways central government can invest in communities – including less centralisation and more co-investments. Sustainable and affordable funding options for the massive infrastructure gap is one of the biggest issues facing Tauranga. As Sam’s opinion piece highlights, this is not only a Tauranga problem. I attended the NZ Infrastructure Symposium a few weeks ago online, and this is a significant nationwide & sector wide issue. Councils are facing an unprecedented amount of infrastructure cost and do not have the funding or financing tools available to be able to deliver it. We need radically new solutions.
