As many of you know, I am deeply passionate about careers in construction. This passion stems from my personal experience working on a new construction project, which was incredibly enlightening. I was on site from the very beginning, as the piles were being driven, all the way through to the commissioning and start-up phase. Initially, I was hired as the Field Information Manager (essentially, Document Control). As the project progressed, I noticed that due to automation, I had a lot of free time. With many documents now sent electronically, the time-consuming task of scanning documents was significantly reduced. When I heard others discussing their workloads, I offered to help. This allowed me to acquire numerous valuable skills, including assisting with project completions and the turnover process. Helping out during this project provided me with the most valuable experience of my career to date. It went beyond the knowledge and skills I gained; it was a test of my values and morals. There were moments when I could have simply passed something along, but instead, I chose to raise concerns and ask the necessary questions. I believe this project experience is where my confidence originated. Many times, I was asked why I was willing to assist teams who were earning nearly 50% more than I was. My response was always the same: I wanted the knowledge and skills. That job was temporary, but the knowledge and skills I gained would benefit me far more in the long run than a short-term increase in pay. Never turn down an opportunity to learn. It is a privilege to have the chance to acquire new skills and knowledge. Not everyone gets that opportunity, so seize it.
