The skills I hope to gain at Little Giant Ladder are to learn how to use CAD and how to test prototypes. These are both essential parts of engineering. You have to know how to use CAD to design the products. You also need to test the prototypes to know that they work and are safe. Therefore, these will be very valuable skills to learn. 2024 Internship Spotlight: Carter Scheer "Through this summer at my internship at Ray Martin, I have learned a lot about mechanical contracting. Through my short time at Ray Martin, I have learned how important mechanical contracting is to build a building and all the extra stuff most people don’t think about when it comes to building it. I have been mainly learning about bidding, estimating and how important communication is on every project to make it run smoothly as possible. Ray Martin has been helpful in the fact that everyone there is always there to answer questions and to give me the tools and allow me to figure things out on my own, which allows me to understand the systems a lot better. One of the biggest factors in helping me learn these systems is to be able to compare the drawings to how they are built. I have been grateful for the opportunity Ray Martin has given me and excited for the rest of the summer." As we wrap up National Engineers Week, we’d love to share with you some advice we compiled from the team this week: “Make sure you love what you do, pick a type of engineering that you get excited about. Also, good work ethic and ownership will get you further than any degrees or licenses.” – Jackie Rowland, PE “Once you’re in your engineering classes, reach out to the different local firms for internship opportunities, don’t wait for the companies to advertise an internship opportunity to you. There are several different paths in each engineering discipline and an internship is the best way to preview what a typical day looks like in that particular field.” – Ben Pearson, PE “Make sure you learn as much as you can in school about how to solve problems and think creatively. Once you get to the real world all the variables and assumptions are not given to you, so you need to know how to break down something complex in order to solve the real-world problem.” – Parker Rowland, ME, MBA “If you’re unsure what field of engineering to choose, I highly recommend taking an intro class or other exploratory engineering class if your school offers it. It’s also totally normal to change your field of engineering multiple times before you find the one for you. You just have to find the one that clicks, but once you do, it should be both fun and engaging.” – Sierra Simpson, EI “Don’t be afraid to fail as it will happen many times in your career. Think about this. It's the summer before you are entering your Senior year of college, and you are a Mechanical Engineering student. Instead of limiting your internship options, you decide to keep an open mind.     You can choose from being in an office all day behind a computer screen or you can entertain a non-traditional experience which allows you to travel to myriad facilities (locally and out of state), all while learning about mechanical systems in real time. The latter choice was the one Luke Donovan from Lehigh University made.   You might be wondering what this non-traditional Mechanical Engineering internship he chose was. Specifically, it was a chance to experience technical sales with a focus on selling Preventive Maintenance Agreements, and under the mentorship of Asset Management Executive Eli Mimari. With Eli as his guide, Luke not only learned about mechanical systems, but he met with clients and conducted work on the business side. Something he had no previous experience with. As such, he stated his communication and interpersonal skills were tested. He now claims these skills have become his greatest strengths. Further, he emphasized Eli was a fantastic role model. Why's that? Luke stated Eli's work ethic is unmatched, and he demands the same from others -- Learn from the best to be the best! Luke, thank you for spending your summer with us! It is a valuable experience as it prepares me for my career and even gives me a head start on understanding some topics that I have not yet encountered in my major, like steel design.
