IPPS Energy Charges vs Capacity Charges ---Pakistsn The consumer-end tariff comprises Energy Purchase Price (EPP), Capacity Purchase Price (CPP), the impact of T&D losses, Distribution & Supplier Margin, and Prior Year Adjustment. In FY 2022, EPP constituted around 60% of the tariff, while CPP accounted for about 40%. The percentage of CPP in the overall tariff is on increasing trend. During FY 2023, the percentage of EPP and CPP was around 50% each, while for FY 2024, it is projected to be around 67% and 33%, respectively. The increase in CPP percentage is due to the augmented capacity of power generation plants and the addition of the HVDC line in the system. At present, fixed charges billed to electricity consumers range from approximately Rs. 200 to Rs.500 per kW/month, determined by their Actual Maximum Demand (MDI) for the month or 50% of sanctioned load, whichever is higher. In contrast, capacity charges billed to DISCOs by CPPA-G remain consistently over Rs. 4,000 per kW/month. This highlights that only around 3% to 4% of the fixed costs is accounted for as fixed charges, while the rest is billed based on variable charges depending on energy consumption. To alleviate the impact of heightened capacity charges, it is crucial to boost the growth rate of electricity sales by implementing cost-reduction measures. Additionally, it is essential to retire generation capacity that has surpassed its initial licensed lifespan, along with low efficiency power plants of GENCOs and KE. Furthermore, the decision in respect of induction of new generation capacity shall be made only after a through consideration of all relevant factors and comprehensive analysis. International Energy Agency #IEA member countries have begun talks with #India regarding its application to become a full member The IEA was created in 1974 to help co-ordinate a collective response to major disruptions in the supply of oil. While oil security is a key focus area for the organisation, the IEA has also expanded into overall energy security, economic development and renewable energy. India, which joined the IEA as an association country in 2017, sent a formal request for full membership to IEA ministers in October 2023. The Budget 2024-2025 of India outlines several measures to support and promote renewable energy and energy security. Here are the key points related to renewable energy from the budget: Energy Transition: The government plans to release a policy document on energy transition pathways that balance employment, growth, and environmental sustainability. PM - Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana: This scheme aims to install rooftop solar plants to provide 1 crore households with free electricity up to 300 units per month. The scheme has already seen significant participation with over 1.28 crore registrations and 14 lakh applications. Pumped Storage Policy: A new policy will be introduced to promote pumped storage projects. These projects are crucial for electricity storage and the smooth integration of renewable energy, which is often variable and intermittent. Research and Development in Nuclear Energy: The government will partner with the private sector to set up Bharat Small Reactors and conduct research and development on Bharat Small Modular Reactors. Funding for these initiatives has been allocated in the interim budget. Advanced Ultra Super Critical Thermal Power Plants: Development of indigenous technology for these high-efficiency thermal power plants is complete. A joint venture between NTPC Limited and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited will set up an 800 MW commercial plant using this technology, with government fiscal support. Roadmap for 'Hard to Abate' Industries: A roadmap will be developed to transition these industries from energy efficiency targets to emission targets. Regulations will facilitate the shift from the 'Perform, Achieve, and Trade' mode to the 'Indian Carbon Market' mode. Support for Traditional Micro and Small Industries: An investment-grade energy audit will be conducted for traditional micro and small industries in 60 clusters, including brass and ceramic sectors. Financial support will be provided to shift to cleaner energy forms and implement energy efficiency measures.
