Today, the world changed. Spacex has demonstrated that we CAN build a fully reusable 1st stage rocket (the most powerful in the world), that can deliver its payload to orbit, and return to land safely. They have also done the same with Starship, showing that a large (payload capacity in excess of 50-75 tons) space ship (because that’s just what it is, in the best tradition of sci-fi), can fly to orbit (well, almost), orbit around the earth, and return to land safely, under its own power. Tech billionaire Jared Isaacman becomes the first-ever private astronaut to conduct a spacewalk, as part of the Polaris Dawn mission by Elon Musk’s SpaceX. Isaacman was part of a four-member crew that lunched from the Kennedy Space Center’s launch complex via SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket on 10 September (last week). The mission also set a record for the highest orbit achieved by a crewed spacecraft since the Apollo missions in the 1960s, reaching an altitude of circa 1,400km. Isaacman’s spacewalk symbolizes a new era where space exploration is no longer the sole domain of governments but is increasingly accessible to private individuals and companies, which may also be viewed as a catalyst for increased private investment in space (as the next frontier for economic expansion)—similar to how the space race of the 20th century spurred technological innovation and geopolitical competition.
