📌Nuclear wasn’t the plan when I started my career 19 years ago. But here I am, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. There’s a lot of talk about skills, talent, and the future of nuclear, and rightly so. This sector is growing, and we need more people to come with us. For me, it’s the challenge that keeps me here. Nuclear is a constant puzzle 🧩 New technologies, fresh thinking, and the need to bring it all together. No two days are the same, and that’s what makes it exciting. But more than that, it’s the people. Some of the sharpest minds I’ve worked with, all pulling together to deliver projects and programmes that genuinely matter. Collaboration isn’t a buzzword here. It’s how we get things done. So how do we bring more people in? Nuclear seats have been largely swept up by the Labour Party, with some notable exceptions taken by the Lib Dems. Some quick reflections for and from the industry: 👉 Labour is pro-nuclear, but we need to make new MPs confident that nuclear is the right choice, in particular by showing how the industry generates good jobs and sustainable economic growth 👉 We need to make the clear scientific case that nuclear is green to Labour and also new Lib Dem MPs. They won't instinctively think nuclear is as green as wind and solar, so we have to hammer home the facts. 👉 We need to build a new core of supporters, to press home the argument that we need a proper programme, not a couple projects, to achieve cost and schedule reductions. 👉 Labour's heavy defeat of the SNP creates good momentum to drop the nuclear ban post Holyrood 2026 Nuclear for Scotland. We will keep it up.

This week the Biden-Harris Administration announced $900 million to build and deploy next-generation nuclear technologies. “Revitalizing America’s nuclear sector is key to adding more carbon free energy to the grid and meeting the needs of our growing economy — from AI and data centers to manufacturing and healthcare,” U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm said. Senior Advisor to the President for International Climate Policy John Podesta added: “Next-generation nuclear energy will play an important role in building the clean power sector of the future. To truly grow nuclear energy, we need a strong commitment with investments ranging from $6 to $10 billion for each 1GWe of proven water-cooled reactor technologies, depending on the region. For first-of-a-kind (FOAK) technologies, the budget will need to be 1.5 to 2 times higher, with consistent funding over 10 to 15 years to refine and scale these new technologies for reliable commercial performance. Recent announcements and initiatives in the USA and Canada are positive steps, but they don’t provide the comprehensive support necessary for significant nuclear expansion.
