🍂 Yesterday was a whirlwind! Quick mentoring for 8 new teams back-to-back. I did my homework and previewed them to assess the main messaging and online presence via websites & LinkedIn profiles. Thanks to Techstars Berlin fall cohort, Brian Daly & Rita de Almeida Russo for inviting me to share my experience in communications, PR, and marketing. Abstractions on best practices many early-stage companies can benefit from: 🤝 Customers: Deeply consider who your ICP is and aim to understand them. Be rather obsessed with their needs. 💡Topics: Have 4-5 hashtags of core topics. This is NOT social media frivolity. It's connection to other people interested in your themes, tags on Medium, on Techmeme, and beats journalists cover. It matters to know what you stand for. 🎤 Messaging: Develop 3 central messages you want viewers or site visitors to remember. That’s about all they have the mental bandwidth to recall...Be sure to zoom out and tell the main story of what you are building. 🎨 Visuals: Use them! For your team, your header images on your profiles, etc. Use the space in a branded way; populate your posts with a meaningful image. 🧠 Mentality: Keep open-minded about where input comes from, and how to diversify your team culture. Follow journalists covering your topics, and for competitors who have paved the way. Let your discussions flow, brainstorm with strangers, get input from many angles, and then, re-focus yourself. ☕️ Great to spend a morning feeling energized by your solutions and camaraderie! Thanks for challenging me, too. Carry on, startups. 🫡 📚 P.S. CEOs and VPs of Marketing at health tech startups often ask me about the value of PR. I tell them that PR has two primary benefits. First, it builds trust and credibility. Positive media coverage from reputable sources enhances the credibility and trustworthiness of a startup. PR helps to establish the startup as a legitimate player in the industry. Second, it generates visibility. Startups often struggle with visibility in a crowded market. PR helps startups get noticed by potential customers, investors, and partners, increasing brand awareness and visibility. Afterall, having a great product makes no difference if no one knows about it. And by the way, when you have trust, credibility, and visibility, the sales process becomes way easier too.

What startups get wrong about PR! Thinking it's just about press releases. Focusing on launches, ignoring storytelling, and failing to build long term narratives. What startups particularly need is to build sustainable media relationships. In my 15 years of building brands across industries---healthcare, sustainability sector(EV's, Solar energy, etc.), fintech, and more--- I have noticed patterns in the way startups approach PR. These are the points that I would like to highlight: 1. Treating PR as an afterthought Startups often focus all their resources on product development and wait until the launch day, when the panic hits! 2. Relying only on press releases Press releases are great but they are not stories what journalists and readers crave. Human-centric narratives that evoke emotion and trust should be given more attention. 3. Ignoring digital PR In 2025 you cannot overlook platforms like LinkedIn, Instagram, and industry blogs. Thus they miss a massive audience. 4. Chasing a big feature instead building trust Yes, landing a feature on Forbes sounds good. But you can't do wonders with just one feature. It's about reputation building. 5. Failing to track ROI Most startups don't measure the impact of PR efforts. They assume media coverage is enough. But there's a need to track leads, sales and returns like partnerships. The right approach doesn't just get you noticed but builds credibility for long-term. #startups #pr #industryinsights #publicrelations

Koo is shutting down, and opinions are flying everywhere. It's as if bad news has its own marketing team working 24*7. I remember when major publishers sought 'exclusive insights' from me on a startup I had been associated with. They were persistent, relentless even, in their pursuit. It's interesting how the narrative shifts. Startups are tough – maybe 4 or 5 succeed out of every 100. You’d think the rare wins would get more attention, right? Instead, there seems to be an obsession with failures, stumbles, and shutdowns. Is this what business media has come to? Why do we dwell on setbacks? Is it because drama sells more than success stories? Or is it just human nature to focus on the negatives? Either way, it's time to rethink this approach. Dwelling on failures only stifles our growth as an ecosystem. Let's learn from the failures and amplify our wins. These stories only inspire us proving that success, though rare, is possible.

Manifest it till you make it > Fake it till you make it 🤔 In startup PR and strategic communication, success isn't securing media coverage—it's landing coverage you seemingly don't deserve. That's where true impact begins. My teams and I have consistently amazed startup clients by placing them in top-tier publications. More often than not, the secret is data-driven content that transforms an unknown brand into an industry authority, providing real value to both readers and journalists. One high-profile piece isn't enough, though. Startups are in a momentum game. Imagine a snowball rolling downhill: that first New York Times piece is the initial push. As attention grows, your snowball expands and accelerates, becoming an unstoppable force. This momentum doesn't just scale PR—it scales your entire business. High-impact coverage: ✅ Attracts Investors: Boosts credibility, validating potential and easing fundraising. ✅ Acquires Customers: Builds trust through third-party endorsements. ✅ Recruits Top Talent: Positions your startup as the place where innovators want to work. It's not about deception. It's about strategically positioning your company to become the success you envision. By securing outsized coverage and leveraging it effectively, you're not just telling your story—you're actively shaping your future. Remember: Data is your secret weapon. It turns heads, builds credibility, and fuels sustained momentum. In today's information-rich world, data isn't just part of the story—it is the story. #PR #StrategicCommunications #Startups #BrandStorytelling
