Another all-levels arrow in the quiver for Appalachian recreation is coming to West Virginia. West Virginia University’s Brad and Alys Smith Outdoor Economic Development Collaborative (Smith OEDC) has been at the forefront and directly supporting many of these efforts. For this upcoming project just outside the small town of Elkins, the Smith OEDC teamed up with local org Elkins Area Shared Trails and the Monongahela National Forest to apply for IMBA’s Trail Accelerator Grant for this ambitious concept plan for the area. The grant was awarded and site planning/field design were completed this year! A 100-mile concept plan is slated for the region and 15 miles of trails have been flagged by IMBA Trail Solutions. Historic preservation is a passion that runs deep here at Christman. It goes beyond saving a building—it’s about preserving the stories, energy, and history held within its walls, while also making a positive environmental impact by reusing and revitalizing existing spaces. Welcome to our series, “Discovering My Passion for Preservation at Christman.” Today, we’re featuring George Conley III, superintendent in the DC Metro region and a dedicated member of our Historic Preservation Group. How did you find your way to historic preservation? "My passion for preservation work began right after my apprenticeship as a mason, and I’ve been doing it ever since. I’ve always loved history and learning how things were built. When working on preservation projects, you never know what you’ll discover—there are ideas, but nothing is certain." What drives your passion for it? "I love the techniques involved in preservation. Bringing old buildings back to life is incredibly gratifying, knowing that a 200+ year-old building might still be standing because of the work we’ve done." #HistoricPreservation #BuiltHistory #PreservationPassion #Revitalization #MonumentalWork

Onboarding is more than just an airport pick-up and a team photo—it's the foundation for success. Welcoming new team members effectively at DGPS is crucial in setting the tone for their journey within the organisation. A strong onboarding process helps our new staff feel valued, connected, and confident from day one. When new staff understand their role and how they contribute to #learningtogethergrowingtogether and the bigger DGPS picture, they’re already engaged and motivated and feel supported and appreciated. Clear expectations and early guidance enable new staff to hit the ground running, leading to quicker and more impactful teaching and learning. It is the perfect opportunity to immerse new teachers and staff in the school's culture, ensuring they feel a sense of belonging. Onboarding isn’t just a one-time event—it’s an ongoing process that fosters growth, learning, and connection. Investing in this process benefits the new staff and the entire organisation, building a team that learns and grows together. We've also learned from our HR data that a positive onboarding experience significantly reduces turnover #DGPS #Onboarding #EmployeeExperience #TeamSuccess Charlotte McCombs Elizabeth McMath
