I recently started a class called Introduction to Jewellery Making at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design here in #Halifax. Last Sunday was the fourth class, and we finished making the band rings we started two weeks ago. Looking at my sparkling, finished silver and brass rings made me think about customer communities and advocacy programs—it really did, I swear! Making these shining rings took TIME and more than just one try. Learning how to measure and size your metal, sawing and cutting it, annealing it, texture it, and then soldering it—and even then, you are not done. You need to learn how to polish out all the imperfections. It took over two weeks to get to this shiny and wearable result. This brings me to online customer communities and advocacy programs. When a community is booming, or customers rave about your product to anyone who can listen, it usually takes time. It takes time to get those shiny results, solder those connections, and build those emotions. It takes time, skill and knowledge. Some companies see the finished product and want it as soon as possible —"Make it happen next quarter!" And hey, it can be done (I've done it). I have stood up customer communities in months. But the soldering may crack when you hammer your ring, put too much heat on it, melt the metal, or don't even get the measurements right. You get the idea. For Urban Behavior Jeans (Clothing for Modern Times) assessing denim wash colors and topstitch/embroidery thread colors was part of my job. At Unisync (uniform company) I checked that pre-production samples met approved color standards for fabrics, embroideries and screens. 🌈If COLOR assessment is in your spectrum of skills, what brand of light box / light booth / color comparison cabinet do you recommend?
