AI's Next Frontier: Transforming Industries and Raising Questions. Happy Monday, Here we go 🤓 🚘 Why Volkswagen is investing billions in a joint venture with Rivian Volkswagen is partnering with Rivian to develop next-generation software-defined vehicle platforms, with VW investing up to $5 billion in the joint venture. This collaboration aims to enhance VW's software capabilities and address issues in its electric vehicles, leveraging Rivian's advanced technology. For Rivian, the deal provides crucial financial support as it works to reduce production costs and launch its R2 lineup in 2026. The partnership, pending final approvals, demonstrates how competitors can collaborate to mutual advantage while maintaining their independence. 🤖 Investors are starting to seriously fret about an AI bubble Despite significant investments in AI infrastructure, Wall Street analysts are questioning the potential returns. Reports from Goldman Sachs, Barclays, and Sequoia Capital express skepticism about AI's ability to solve complex problems and its future profitability. Goldman Sachs' report "Gen AI: Too Much Spend, Too Little Benefit?" questions AI's value without a clear "killer application." Barclays' note, "Cloud AI Capex: FOMO or Field-Of-Dreams?" warns of a potential investment bubble similar to the 1990s dot-com crash. Sequoia’s David Cahn refers to this as “AI’s $600 billion question,” advising caution amid the hype. These analysts suggest the AI industry may face a long and uncertain road ahead. 👩⚕️ Why nurses are protesting AI The National Nurses United (NNU) is concerned about AI's impact on healthcare, fearing it devalues nurses' skills amid chronic understaffing. They claim healthcare operators rush untested AI technologies into service, compromising care. Kaiser Permanente insists AI supports, rather than replaces, medical decisions. However, nurses report inefficiencies and restrictions from AI systems, such as Epic, which limit their ability to override automated decisions. While they appreciate the technology that eases their workload, nurses emphasize the need for careful AI integration to preserve their professional judgment. #TechNews #AI #MachineLearning #Cybersecurity #ElectricVehicles #SmartHomes #VirtualReality #TechInnovation #SustainableTech #DigitalTransformation #FutureOfTech #TechTrends #Healthtech

If the logic holds, then every Airbus 350 is simply a “wrapper” over two Rolls Royce engines. People who dismissively call modern AI apps “wrappers” over LLM do not understand business, and least of all, how product manufacturing—or how software works. On Thursday, I was at an AI Meetup in Palo Alto, and the host gave a 5-minute condescending spiel on the topic of “LLM wrapper startups.” Lampooning their fundraise and projecting sarcasm at their existence. I took minor offense to that narrative and walked out. The analogy raises questions such as: Was Henry Ford’s automobile business a wrapper over 2-stroke engines that had the power of 760 horses? Or was Amazon a wrapper over a catalog of books? Or was Salesforce a wrapper over sales contacts? Or Michael Dell wrapped an Intel motherboard with a chassis? Or Tesla EVs are nothing more than a wrapper over Panasonic 18650 Lithium-Ion cells. #ai #LLM #aiagent

A morning well spent at the Michelmores breakfast followed by the South West’s Innovation Expo yesterday. It was great to connect with everyone there. It’s happening! This is Tesla Optimus, a robot run by AI that will be working on Tesla’s production lines and also technology that will be sold to other companies. I’m told that this Optimus’s job will be something that’s hard or dangerous for humans but I’m sure it won’t be long before this evolves and working alongside robot colleagues, or ‘employing’ a robot workforce to supplement the humans, is just normal practice. There are so many benefits to having a robot workforce but it also raises concerns about the future of employment. It's understandable why many companies and leaders might be interested in this technology, but how will this affect our companies, people and our industries as we know them? What are your thoughts? Great to see Clodagh Murphy, Michelle Law, Dan Pritchard, Colin Dart, Harry Trick, Richard Cobb, Joe Pearce #Tech #AI #Employment

CAN'T MISS post from my friend Balaji Srinivasan on X last night. Paraphrasing: "China spent the last 45 years shaping their economy into an industrial powerhouse, while the US spent those decades de-industrializing, regulating, and offshoring. Like the US, China does have a high-tech culture, but they also have a low-tech and medium-tech culture — a culture of skilled laborers and factory workers. It is very nontrivial to bring that back to the US. The best case outcome might actually be to leapfrog with robotics. So you better pray for Elon Musk, Brett Adcock, and Kyle Vogt to get humanoid robots working. Of course, Washington DC has fought AI and self-driving every step of the way, so they'll probably fight robots too. And if that doesn't happen — if the robotic leapfrog hits a roadblock, such as the fact that many pieces of the robotics supply chain are still made in China — we're headed for a tough situation." * * * #Reindustrialize is one of America's best hopes to achieve “Operation Warp Speed for Manufacturing” 500+ capital allocators, manufacturing business, hard tech startups, and USG/DOD orgs will show up. In previous posts I talked about some of the technology companies and capital allocators coming. And with a bit more than more than 1 month to go, here are the universities confirmed to contribute at Reindustrialize:

Connected companies are better positioned to win in the AI-powered economy. Businesses need new operating and data-sharing models to compete in the age of AI. Connected companies use data to create value at the speed of need. Tesla is a boundless company. We believe the Boundless Company is the logical evolution of the Connected Company for the digital-first, decentralized-everything world. Tesla (the company), the car (Tesla's hardware product), the FSD (Tesla's software product), and the driver (Tesla's customer) are all connected. They all share data and that data goes both ways -- from the 'car+driver' to the 'company+training system' and back in the form of improvements to the hardware and software. The AI is not developed solely by the company in isolation from its customers. The technology is developed, tested, improved, updated, and distributed in real time, thanks to the constant flow of data. https://lnkd.in/eC9PSP8a ZDNET Henry King

2024 is the year of convergence between AI and robotics. It is not the absolute level of skills that impress us. It is the rate of change that surprises us. Please, I want to see more of these!

This is just insane! Tesla's Optimus robot is now able to fold shirts 😳 The levels of dexterity and control are just mind-blowing. It doesn't look real. That first grab of the shirt by the left hand as it’s swinging and unfolding was beyond impressive. While Optimus cannot yet do this autonomously, it's only a matter of time before the humanoid robot can do this fully autonomously and in an arbitrary environment (it won’t require a fixed table with a box with only one shirt). Undoubtedly the greatest robot demo we have ever seen by a mile. Welcome to the future. Just to emphasise the point that this may have been or may be a factory, it now has robot workers. This use case (and then some) and eventual rollout across sectors of our society. #AI and #robotic #automation #adapt #learn #makeit Also, the home robot innovator winner is Tesla again. 😏😎🧑💻🤖 Potential first mover advantage = 💰 (never mind Boston robotics promises for decades) #notInvestmentAdvice
