"Use of 1099 nurses has been painted in a negative light in recent years, with some going as far as saying they pose a risk for healthcare facilities. In reality, the true risk for patients and nurses lies in lack of nursing staff — and that’s an area where the right mix of employees and independent contractors can make a difference for long-term care." - Curtis Anderson Read more on 1099 vs. W2: https://lnkd.in/gx_ce97X

"[T]he crisis we face in nurse staffing is not just a lack of nurses but actually a growing gap between nursing experience and patients' complexity. That gap has increased in recent years, because newer nurses are replacing those who worked at the bedside for years, while at the same time progressive and critical care has become more complex." Why are LPNs excluded from the new proposed staffing mandate for nursing homes? The proposed rule from CMS calls for a minimum of 0.55 hours of care from registered nurses per resident per day and 2.45 hours of care from a nurse aide per resident per day. This focuses on the RN component, but leaves out the significant role of the LPNs who are very important in providing care at the bedside in the long term care population. What do you think about the exclusion of LPNs?

There are several reasons that account for our national nursing shortage. Many of which are well-known - moral distress, ongoing mandation, redeployment, a lack of resources, worsening nurse-to-patient ratios and so on. All are factors that continue to further erode the frontline. And yet, few people are talking about the costliness of nurse turnover. In an article published on roarforgood.com entitled 'The Cost of Nurse Turnover,' the journalist wrote, “The average cost of turnover for a bedside RN ranges from $28,400 to $51,700 USD." In another published by NSI in their 2023 National Healthcare Retention and RN Staffing Report, “The average cost of turnover for a bedside RN is $52,350, a 13.5% increase from the previous year.” With just two reports - and both solely focused on RNs - one can't help but wonder what this looks like in our province. How much we are bleeding out as we pay for nurses walking out the door? Isn’t it better to invest in the public nurses who are on the frontline today? Radical change just might be thinking of new ways to keep the staff we have. #TimeForRadicalChange
