The Chinese auto-maker: BYD has just launched a new hybrid powertrain that is capable of 2,000 kms (1,250 miles) without re-charging or re-fueling. With models like these from #BYD, #Nio, #Xpeng, #Geely and other EV makers in China -- as well as -- competition from Europe, Japan, South Korea...and US itself, the EV pioneer we all know: Tesla -- faces challenging times ahead. Tesla's model fleet is the oldest among EV makers. With intensifying competition, Tesla's margins are compressing. Tesla's massive giga-factories have a higher fixed cost base than its nimbler rivals who manufacture automobiles with a greater degree of financial and operational flexibility. Tesla's fully-autonomous self-driving capability remains an unattainable aspiration. There is significant turnover in the executive ranks at Tesla — which is never a good sign. The mercurial CEO of the company, Elon Musk, leaves a lot to be desired from a corporate governance perspective. So much so, that he is indicating that he will take Tesla’s #AI technology and roll it up into a separate company. (I wonder what the institutional investors in Tesla and its Board have to say about it). Tesla's build quality is not nearly as consistent or precise as its German rivals like BMW Group, AUDI AG and Mercedes-Benz AG. So from a low-end of the price spectrum, Tesla is competing with Chinese EV makers...and losing market-share. In the middle of the price spectrum, Tesla is competing with Japanese, South Korean and US makers such as Toyota Motor Corporation, Hyundai Motor Company (현대자동차), General Motors, Ford Motor Company and Nissan Motor Corporation...and losing market-share. Meanwhile, at the high-end of the price spectrum, the Italian and German makers are eating into Tesla's market-share. BYD Pulls Ahead of Tesla to Become Largest EV Maker While only a few people outside of China were familiar with BYD just a few years ago. The Shenzhen-based electronics and manufacturing giant rose to international fame in recent years, as its largest business unit/subsidiary BYD Auto became one of the largest makers of electric cars in the world and expanded beyond its home market. BYD has become the world's largest producer of pure electric cars, surpassing Tesla. In 2024, Tesla made 1,774,442 electric vehicles, shy of BYD’s 1,777,965. This change shows BYD's fast growth and strategic plans in the global EV market in a short period. Over the whole year, BYD sold about 1.768 million EVs, a 12% increase compared to the previous year. In contrast, Tesla's sales slipped to 1.79 million EVs, down 1.1% from last year, marking the first annual sales drop for Tesla in a decade. While that is an admittedly small decline of just 1.1 percent and Tesla shipped more cars than ever before in the fourth quarter, the drop from 38 percent growth in 2023 to a 1 percent decline is significant and might worry some shareholders, especially considering that Tesla is valued like a growth company, with a price-to-earnings ratio that can only be justified by strong future growth.
