CIDB's Certified Facilities Management Manager (CFMM) & CIDB's Certified Trainer for CE-14 & B09 Codes _ Landscape Construction and Playground, Subject Matter Expert for Procurement & Contracts
Posting #117 - Stop the Blaming Game - Landscaping in Facilities Management (spent some time reading this..hope this helps us in managing landscape contractors) I had an opportunity to talk to a party working for an owner of one concession project. I noted that the landscape contractor kept on blaming the landscape designer for their response as to why they cannot provide a good establishment of landscape through their maintenance contract. I am a processed person. I love to do what I call a 'forensic audit' on landscape performance. I asked for the contractor's maintenance plan/ schedule. No schedule developed. I asked for a technical report. No technical report available. I asked for their recommendation for improvement. No written recommendation available. I viewed their monthly report. Not interesting at all!. Reports is one of sources of information and it should mention about issues and proposed solutions, not just providing photographs or people working at sites ONLY!. I can't learn anything from them. Now I am taking the challenge to prove that landscape design is not a total issue on any landscape failure. People designed the landscape 12 years ago and of course their understanding of issues will not be the same as today. We as FM have to see it from the functional aspect of the landscape at present day. If the landscape fails to bloom, then what should we do?..where is the tracking of maintenance activities? We have to provide information that the design is no longer functioning as to what we intend to. Again...where is the tracking & planning history? A credible contractor should provide all those historical data on activities they do so that we have evidence that the landscape is deteriorating due to life cycles, not lacking in maintenance. When we say lacking in maintenance, we need to drill down the aspect of maintenance we need to scrutinize. We need historical data. If landscape contractors are not able to provide, they are not ready yet to become SME in landscape. To those who are in landscape business, please be systematic and credible. Thank you. Love this! Data is key to identifying problems early and taking remedial actions. Clearly, it’s not enough for term contractors to just take some photos after doing the work and send by WA because that’s not data that can be analysed. Changing mindsets towards tech adoption is key to driving the changes we want to see.
