Designing Smart Holes for FDM 3D Printing! I've been working to refine and test this new technique that enhances the printing process by addressing the challenge of overhangs requiring support material especially in horizontal holes. In traditional 3D printing, angles over 45 degrees are problematic, often necessitating additional structures that increase print time and material waste. In this approach of mine, developed through rigorous testing, eliminates the need for such support with a design tweak, optimizing hole angles to remain below the critical 45-degree threshold. 1. This technique eliminates the need for support material in holes, regardless of their size or channel length. 2. Prevents overhang collapse, ensuring the structural integrity of the print. Reduces print time and post-processing labor, allowing for a smoother finish directly off the print bed. The time saved can vary. For components that would have required extensive support material, the reduction in print time is significant. Even for parts that need less support, the decrease is still noticeable. This method is now integral to my projects, leading to more efficient prints and demonstrating that minor design enhancements can greatly improve manufacturing processes.
