Exciting news! Our paper, which detailed the necessity of little investment to adolescent Nutrition and Health, can massively create a potential paradigm shift to our next generation in Tanzania Mainland has been published. We used 2019 data from the School Malaria and Nutrition Survey. We explore that, even in meager resource setting, different programs can strategically and synergistically use the available low-resource to address common health challenges. Our study reveals the existence of triple burden of overweight, stunting, and anemia among Tanzanian adolescents, emphasizing the importance of physical activity and quality diets in schools to combat poor health. Nutrition is a massive problem in South Africa because we are dealing with both under- and over-nutrition. And don’t for a minute imagine that YOU don’t bear the economic burden of this state of affairs. According to the Discovery Vitality ObeCity Index 2017, the economic impact of obesity in SA is a shocking R701 BILLION each year. So, what can be done?  The prevention of overweight, obesity, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and chronic inflammatory states requires information and communication technology that enables the holistic integration of nutrition and exercise at affordable rates.  South Africa has set itself the ambitious task of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, so if we hope to address our nationwide nutrition problem, we must adopt a multi-disciplinary approach with contributions from every sector.  It is only through this collaborative effort that we can bring people effective, accessible, and affordable options for keeping themselves healthy. 🆕 🇬🇹 ¡Protectoras Unidas! 💪 A new campaign co-developed and co-financed by the CCP-led Breakthrough ACTION Guatemala project and five private sector companies aims to reduce chronic malnutrition in the country. Using in-person coversations, radio and social media in one phase of the campaign, CCP engaged rural mothers and grandmothers in supporting their children’s health in their first 1,000 days of life—a critical developmental period. The result? 📈 83% of mothers participating in the project considered themselves to be Protectoras Unidas after the campaign and reported how they identified with the campaign's key messages, suggesting the strategy was effective. “What resonates with mothers and grandmothers is that this concept makes them feel like they are working together toward a common goal, makes them feel they have the power to help their children be healthier with every action they made in a normal day,” says CCP’s Ana Esquivel, senior private sector engagement officer at Breakthrough ACTION in Guatemala. Since our food systems and life styles are changing, so is our burden of disease. There was a time when communicable diseases were the leading cause of deaths and disabilities. With science-based advancements in treatments, vaccination, and public health infrastructure, an increasing number of precious lives were saved from premature deaths. However, there is a rapid increase in noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) such as cancers, heart diseases, hypertension, diabetes, and obesity owing to changes in dietary pattern, and sedentary life styles. In addition, we have a patchy information, diagnostic and treatment facilities for primordial and primary prevention. But the good news is that the rapid spread of diet-related NCDs can be controlled by altering the modifiable risk factors such as the availability and consumption of salt, sugar, and oils and fats. According to FAO, the Pacific Islands, Near East, and North Africa are home to the top 20 countries where adult obesity rates are more than 30%. To eradicate #malnutrition in all its forms by 2030, nations must address the increasing concern of overweight and obesity. As an example, SUN country Costa Rica has implemented national dietary guidelines targeting dietary patterns behind #obesity. With this approach, countries like Costa Rica can significantly cut productivity losses and over 73% of hidden costs linked to obesity and related non-communicable diseases (NCDs). More than two billion people worldwide lack essential nutrients crucial for their health and future. This "invisible hunger" leads to stunted growth, weakened immunity, and even impaired cognitive development. Food fortification, which involves adding essential vitamins and minerals to staple foods, has emerged as a game-changer in the fight against malnutrition. It is impactful, scalable, extremely cost-effective, and reaches everyone at the table. We are delighted to announce our support for Nutrition International’s Bridging the Fortification Gap in the Philippines’ project. Through the scaling up of food fortification efforts, the project aims to improve the dietary quality and micronutrient status of the population, especially among vulnerable groups like children under five, adolescent girls and pregnant women. Nutrition International is a global non-profit organisation working to deliver low-cost, high-impact nutrition interventions to vulnerable communities in more than 60 countries in Asia and Africa.
