🌍 Reflections as a Research Assistant with Panorama Research Africa Working as a Research Assistant for Panorama Research Africa was a rewarding journey into healthcare research in rural communities(Homabay county). I profiled healthcare facilities, updated GPS locations, and conducted interviews with healthcare providers and women aged 18-45. The focus was on assessing health-seeking behaviors, barriers to access, resource management, reproductive health, and challenges in delivering and receiving services. Fieldwork came with challenges like mislocated facilities, participant reluctance, and navigating rough terrains. I addressed these through pre-planned routes, hiring motorbikes for efficient movement, and using effective communication to minimize rejections. Respecting hospital schedules and coordinating with team leaders ensured smooth operations. This role enhanced my skills in MEAL, project management, and community engagement. I learned to collect actionable data, engage stakeholders, and adapt to real-world challenges—all critical to improving healthcare services. Today marks three years since I joined CDC Zambia. This is the best job I have ever had! Interestingly, I almost missed this amazing opportunity. In 2021, I was a registrar specializing in general surgery and was growing tired of clinical work. Saving lives was fulfilling, but the long hours, endless patient queues, and inadequate medicines drained the joy from my career. I was ready for a new challenge. So, Job hunting became my side hustle. Every night, I searched job boards. If a job matched my skills, I applied. Over many months, I applied to more than 50 jobs but rarely heard back. In June 2021, I saw an advert for Provincial Medical Officer (PMO). I hesitated to apply. I had no experience managing a province, district, or even a facility. My closest leadership role was as the acting Head of the Surgical Department. So, I ignored the advert. A few days later, the PMO job was shared within several WhatsApp groups to which I belonged. Still, I ignored it. One afternoon, I saw a fellow surgical registrar applying for it. This encouraged me to apply too. I submitted a rushed application, thinking I stood no chance. I only applied to check off a box. Weeks later, I was invited for an interview, and the rest is history. The key lesson I learned: if you meet some of the eligibility criteria, apply no matter how out of reach the job seems. Don’t self-reject! Are you ready for a career move this year?
