Challenging Perspectives: Evaluating the 'Food is Medicine' Concept in Contemporary Healthcare A recent publication in the Journal of the American Medical Association dismisses the concept of "Food is Medicine” stating, “It is well established that there is value in offering food at no cost to people who need it. But the medical and public health communities’ enthusiasm for food is medicine seems unjustified by its likely benefit.” Going on, the authors argue that encouraging individuals to adopt healthy eating habits, even when provided with food by healthcare providers, proves to be challenging. They cite the overburdened and difficult-to-access healthcare system, which lacks a commendable track record in coordinating with other providers, such as nutrition counselors, as a primary hindrance. HOWEVER…. Upon sharing this report with the many doctors within our network (Restorative Farms), some would argue that the authors might lack hands-on clinical experience, especially within a safety net population where doctors have witnessed significant potential impact. Others may believe that linking food to the healthcare system introduces a narrative power that was previously absent. Within this movement, there are numerous skeptics and outspoken naysayers, particularly among those who assert that expanding current strategies should suffice. In response to this perspective, one doctor I spoke to remarked, "Yes, AND... If they were sufficient, the Food is Medicine movement wouldn't have been necessary”.

Although these two professions are undoubtedly related, they maintain distinctive qualities. Nutrition and dietetics practices still often find themselves surrounded by misinformation for several reasons including, but not limited to, the complexity of the field that is constantly evolving, 🔄️and the sociocultural influences that widely govern dietary habits in the Kenyan population.🍽️  As practicing nutritionists and dietitians, we felt the gap and sought to provide solutions as we could. ✨The Diet Update is a platform that addresses this need one webinar at a time.
