Climate Smart Agriculture: Mimicking Nature in Raising Catfish Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) is an approach to farming that helps mitigate climate change while also increasing productivity and resilience to extreme weather events. It's a win-win for both the environment and food production. One interesting example of CSA mimicking nature is in catfish farming. Traditionally, catfish are raised in intensive aquaculture systems, where they are confined in ponds or tanks with high stocking densities. This can lead to a number of environmental problems, including water pollution from excess nutrients and antibiotics used to prevent disease. However, there's a new approach to catfish farming that takes inspiration from nature called Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA). IMTA systems combine catfish with other aquatic species, such as seaweed and shellfish. These other species help to improve water quality by filtering out excess nutrients and pathogens that would otherwise harm the catfish. IMTA is just one example of how climate-smart agriculture can be used to raise catfish in a more sustainable way. Improving soil drainage stands out as a vital step in combating Fusarium wilt.
