Did you know that in one festival season, the average municipality creates 25,000 tonnes of waste? Mind Your Plastic believes there is a significant opportunity to cut this number down by working with municipalities to enact reduction strategies at events, which is why we developed the Plastic-Free Events Policy program. Since the program launched in early 2023, we've already been working with Canadian municipalities, like the Town of Ajax and the City of Nanaimo to minimize their plastic pollution footprint at events. The current crisis of global plastic pollution requires a complete shift in plastics management, in particular moving towards a circular economy focus and change overall production and consumption patterns. This means a significant change in products design as well as reusing, recycling, refurbishing, as well as addressing the plastics which are currently in circulation and not being recuperated from the environment. We are now negotiating the INC3, in the process of a legally binding agreement to combat plastic pollution, including the marine environment and are hopeful to have a ambitious outcome from this session. #agend2030 #scp #sdg12 #plasticstreaty #circulareconomy

Without ambitious and coordinated efforts, #plastic leakage into our environment is projected to surge by 1/3 by 2040. This week in #Nairobi, global negotiators convened for the third round of discussions (#INC3) on a global treaty to end plastic pollution, marking the first discussion on the text of the zero draft. As these negotiations conclude at the end of 2024, this milestone moment underscores the precedent of uniting policymakers, private sectors, civil society, and the informal sector for a more inclusive and cohesive treaty. At GPAP, we stand ready to provide guidance, share lessons learned, and exchange experiences on how #evidence-based national roadmaps and #multistakeholder actions can play a pivotal role in achieving the desired outcome of the treaty. The plastic crisis is getting bigger every year. As responsible industry leaders, we have taken action to reduce plastic use and design for circularity and support collection and recycling. But this is not enough to change the global trend. It's clear that we need a more systemic approach. A global and legally-binding regulatory framework on plastics is needed to make a market transformation happen. The global UN plastic treaty is a huge opportunity to turn off the tap of plastic pollution. I am honored about the opportunity to contribute to this message from the Global Plastic Action Partnership, an initiative of the World Economic Forum, to shape a more sustainable and inclusive world through the creation of a functioning #circulareconomy on plastics.
