🚧 Big news from the rail construction industry! Progress is being made on the construction of the landmark HS2 viaduct that will bring high-speed trains to the new Curzon Street station in Birmingham. 🔎 The completed sections mark a significant step forward in the programme to build a series of viaducts carrying the railway through Birmingham's industrial heartland and into the city centre. 🏗️ The monumental task is being undertaken by Balfour Beatty VINCI with a team of over 200 people working tirelessly, they've managed to pour 3,700 cubic metres of concrete to complete sections of the Curzon 3 viaduct. That's no small task! 💡 Now, it's not just about the technical aspects. This project is not only promoting connectivity but also redefining public spaces and the city's skyline. The V-shaped piers maximise daylight underneath, creating usable public space and adding to the vibrancy of the city. 🤔 This poses a few questions: - How can this model of construction benefit other cities? - How is the rail industry evolving to better serve communities? As we start the new year, we reflect on some standout projects from the past year that continue to shape our work in 2025. Kicking off with Parkhead Viaduct, a remarkable structure dating back to the 1880s, originally built to connect Dudley to the wider railway network. As part of the Midland Metro Alliance, Pell Frischmann has led the design and refurbishment of the scheme, strengthening the viaduct to support both future tram services and heavy rail operations. Our team was selected by the Massachusetts Port Authority to construct the Logan Airport NCEC Project, a 725,000-square-foot new Terminal E Parking Garage in the existing parking lot. The multi-story structure will feature 5,000 parking and ground transportation spaces. The project also includes the construction of a vehicular bridge connecting the existing central parking complex and a new pedestrian bridge connecting the new garage to Terminals E and C. In addition, modifications will be made to Arrival and Departures level roadways to accommodate access to the garage. Solar PV panels will be installed on the garage façade and roof to offset electricity consumption, and the project will seek a Parksmart certification for the Garage to be issued by the Green Building Certification Institute. #Silvertown Tunnel to open in April 2025, Transport for London confirms Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed that the #SilvertownTunnel will open on 7 April 2025, as construction work on the project nears an end. The 1.4km long twin bore Silvertown Tunnel will take road traffic under the River Thames, between Silvertown to the north and the Greenwich Peninsula to the south. Commuters on the Mitchell Freeway will notice a big change in the coming months, with two new #bridges being constructed over the freeway as part of the Stephenson Avenue Extension and Stirling Bus Interchange projects. The project team will employ a unique #constructionmethod, which will see the bridges progressively built and “launched” from one side of the freeway to the other. The advanced construction technique, selected for its benefits in maintaining access to the Mitchell Freeway and train services, will showcase an innovative approach to #infrastructure development in #WesternAustralia. The technique uses casting beds, where #reinforcedconcrete bridge sections are poured and cured, before being “launched” into place over live traffic conditions. Permanent and temporary #piers have also been constructed on the freeway, with vehicles shifted onto a temporary alignment while the works take place.
