Data Dive: View looking North East over the Bear River just West of Preston, Idaho within the Franklin Bear, area of interest. The image was created from the lidar bare earth model and colored by elevation. Data were collected, over approximately one million acres of land in southern Idaho, to aid USGS in assessing the topographic and geophysical properties of the study area to support the 3DEP mapping initiative. #DataDive #Idaho #BearRiver #USGS #3DEP #GIS #Geospatial #BeyondEngineering #NV5

So we're technically a couple days late on #WorldLidarDay, but every day is lidar day at #KGS. #Lidar (light detection and ranging) is a type of laser scanning that allows geoscientists to make incredibly detailed 3D computer representations of Earth's surface, even in heavily forested areas. KGS researchers use statewide lidar data to identify landslides and sinkholes, develop geohazard susceptibility maps, improve flood modeling, advance resilience planning, and map surface expressions of faults in the New Madrid seismic zone. https://lnkd.in/e8gH-G9g? #geology #geoscience

A point cloud captured with a terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) reveals the inside of a cavern at Golden Gate Highlands National Park, South Africa. Within the cavern lies a geomorphological phenomenon called Tafoni, speculated to have formed due to preferential weathering. However, there isn't an accepted theory behind the formation of this cavernous weathering. This was a component of my Honours project, where I evaluated the feasibility of using LiDAR to scan macro and micro geomorphological features. I generated a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of this phenomenon and calculated the volume of the total weathered material. This might provide insight into the reasons behind the formation of this feature and allows for the rapid and accurate measurement of complex geomorphological features. #LiDAR #Geomorphology #Geomorphometry #MorphometricAnalysis #3Dscan #Surveying #TLS

Title: Mapping Disturbances from Hurricanes and Lightning in Mangrove Forests Using LiDAR in Everglades National Park Description: This project utilizes LiDAR data to identify and map disturbances caused by hurricanes and lightning strikes in the mangrove forests of Everglades National Park, Florida. Using high-density LiDAR point clouds from a 1 km × 1 km study area near Shark River, the project demonstrates a comprehensive process in ArcGIS. The aim is to provide a more efficient and effective method than traditional field surveys or optical remote sensing, which lack tree height information. This approach helps understand the environmental impact of disturbances and aids in the management and conservation of mangrove ecosystems. #LiDAR #RemoteSensing #MangroveConservation #EnvironmentalImpact #ArcGIS #ForestManagement #HurricaneImpact #LightningStrikes #EvergladesNationalPark #GIS #EcologicalResearch #DataScience #EnvironmentalMonitoring #SpatialAnalysis #ConservationScience #GeospatialAnalysis

Results from the default Esri LiDAR Classification Model has been working great for our recent Utility Line Surveys in California and Hawaii. The amount of labor hours saved and the improved accuracy from tools like this is impressive. I can't wait to share some of the new image segmentation work I've been working on related to infrastructure mapping in the urban environments that will reduce field hours and decrease safety risks for our field teams. #utilities #machinelearning #esri #segmentation #gis #geospatial #water #aerialmapping

This report provides validation and intercomparison results for the Planet Forest Carbon Diligence products. It is intended for geospatial data users interested in aboveground carbon density, canopy cover, and canopy height datasets. The Forest Carbon Diligence products quantify — globally and annually — the density of carbon stored in trees, the area occupied by trees, and stand-level mean canopy height. These estimates are produced from machine learning models trained on historical satellite observations, airborne LiDAR data, and spaceborne LiDAR data. Diligence aboveground carbon estimates show strong agreement with other high quality global datasets, such as NASA-GEDI data, ESA-CCI Biomass data, and UN-FAO country-level statistics. Click in to learn more about the detailed assessment methods and results. #ForestCarbonDiligence #CarbonDensity #CanopyCover #CanopyHeight #SatelliteData #LiDARData #MachineLearning #GeoSpatialData #DataValidation #DataIntercomparison

Today on #InternationalDayofForests, we want to show you one of the ways the ABMI is utilizing #lidar technology: to create a high-resolution vegetation inventory of linear features in the Richardson caribou range as part of Government of Alberta's #Caribou Habitat Recovery Program. Lidar stands for "light detection and ranging," and is collected using an aircraft with a laser and sensor attached to it that create high-resolution 3D-snapshots of the forests and the underlying surface it flies over. These 3D snapshots give us a picture of forest structure, composition of human footprint, and the state of restoration or regeneration of vegetation following human disturbance. Using #machinelearning with lidar data and #aerialimagery that has been ground-truthed, we can classify forest vegetation, and semi automatically map out seismic lines. Criteria from the provincial restoration framework are then applied to assign restoration status to seismic lines in order to determine appropriate management interventions. Incredibly, this method of seismic line mapping is up to 89% more effective than previously used methods. The ABMI is committed to partnering, using, and sharing lidar data to improve natural resource science and natural resource management. We operate a wide-area lidar data acquisition program and we are pleased to announce that some of the data collected through this program will be made publicly available in 2024. Read our open lidar data announcement here: https://lnkd.in/guKrkkD9 For updates on the availability of this data and other ABMI data products, please subscribe to our Data Digest: https://lnkd.in/gkM39tWd Or you can always send us an email for more information at abmidata@ualberta.ca.

Geologic maps form the basis for a multitude of natural resource-related decisions. Geologic mapping is a rapidly evolving discipline that employs a range of modern techniques including satellite and drone imagery, multispectral analysis, 3D visualization, custom lidar (high-resolution topography), complex relational databases, and the new and evolving field of machine learning, a subfield of artificial intelligence (AI). Learn how our Geologic Mapping Program is employing these new tools in the latest Mapping News–https://ow.ly/Wgx850Qt8au #utahgeology #geologicmaps Photo: Drone photograph of unconsolidated deposits and a rock glacier in upper Gad Valley scanned with new drone-based lidar.
